POSITION SUMMARY:
The Operations Manager, under the direction of the Recreation Facility Manager, is responsible for overseeing two ice rinks, two multipurpose courts, meeting rooms, multipurpose activity space, a playground, and surrounding grounds. The position includes all ice-making operations; monitoring and managing the building systems and ice resurfacing equipment; facility upkeep and preventative maintenance; maintaining the overall interior and exterior of the facility, including the overall safety and security of the facility and working with Facilities Management on building repairs and replacement equipment and systems. In addition, performs various difficult-to-complex administrative activities related to Operations Management, including finances and accounting, managing a team of full-time and part-time staff, and discretionary activities supporting effective business operations.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: (includes, but is not limited to, the following)
- Under the guidance of the Sault Tribe Facilities Management Department, coordinates facility, site, and infrastructure development, remodeling, and facility additions.
- In conjunction with the Sault Tribe Facilities Management Department, manages and maintains maintenance of facility systems, including but not limited to HVAC, boilers, chiller, exhaust, condenser tower, and generator, including working with contractors related to infrastructure, upkeep, and preventative maintenance.
- Direct and perform installations and repairs of facility and equipment.
- Perform routine checks and maintenance, including painting, plumbing, electrical, mechanical repairs, general carpentry, and other normal maintenance work.
- Manage and maintain all critical ice-making equipment, including the ice resurfacer, ice melt pit, refrigeration system, and all associated equipment for operation, including maintaining records and log books.
- Required to operate all facility equipment, including ice resurfacer, train departmental personnel, and performed safety checks.
- Monitor both ice rink surfaces' depth, quality, and temperature regularly and schedule maintenance accordingly.
- Manages the security and safety of the building under OSHA compliance.
- Maintain hazardous materials communication program, material safety data sheets, and required records and permits.
- Develops and oversees all cleaning duties for the facility.
- Ensure facility exterior grounds are maintained – including lawncare, parking lot maintenance, and snow removal for the facility roof, parking lot, and walkways are scheduled or contracted.
- Oversees all aspects of event set-ups and changeovers and makes last-minute adjustments in room temperatures and equipment set-ups at customers' request.
- Maintain and inventory tools, key systems, machinery, equipment, first aid, and cleaning supplies; prepare requisitions and purchasing agreements as needed.
- Develop and implement operations, organizational, and service plans, including developing and enforcing policies and procedures.
ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES: (includes, but is not limited to, the following)
- Researches facility energy efficiency and clean technology trends and stay current on equipment and safety strategies.
- Assists with preparing the annual budget and reviews department financial transactions.
- Prepares reports, delivers formal presentations, and attends meetings as necessary.
- Communicates all facility maintenance issues, concerns, and project status to the Sault Tribe Facilities Management Department.
- All other job-related duties as assigned.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
The position has a lifting of 100 pounds maximum and frequent lifting/carrying up to 50 pounds. Physical factors include constant standing, walking, sitting, reaching, manual handling; use of hearing, smell, near/midrange/far vision; depth perception, color vision, field of vision, bending; frequent pushing/pulling, kneeling, travel, typing; occasional climbing, stooping and crawling. Working conditions include constant exposure to noise and vibration; frequent exposure to extreme weather, extreme heat/cold; occasional exposure to wet/humidity and air quality. Potential hazards include constant exposure to mechanical parts, frequent exposure to mechanical parts, highly exposed places, chemicals, client contact, computer and equipment use, occasional exposure to insecticides/pesticides, infectious exposure, and equipment use.
REQUIREMENTS:
Education: Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Facility Management, or a related field or five years of related work experience may be considered in lieu of education.
Experience: Five years work experience in maintenance or recreational facility operations required. Experience in ice refrigeration and maintenance preferred. Five years supervisory experience required.
Certification/License: Will be required to undergo and successfully pass a background check. Must maintain a good moral character standing. Will be required to complete and pass pre-employment drug testing.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Knowledge of facility management principles and practices; OSHA and MIOSHA standards preferred. Ability to read and comprehend blueprints, drawings, and other related material. Knowledge of organizational and service plans for maintenance, repair, and custodial services is required. Knowledge of ice resurfacing, plumbing, electrical, boilers, and ammonia compressor systems is required. Knowledge of refrigeration, ventilation, and air conditioner systems is required. Working knowledge of current trends related to products and systems for effective facility operations. Working knowledge and technical experience to be able to maintain rink systems and equipment. Knowledge of set-up and operational procedures for functions, events, and public assemblies is preferred. Must have organizational skills and be able to plan, prioritize and manage workload to meet goals promptly. Must have project management skills; provide strong leadership, prioritize project tasks, meet project deadlines, and effectively communicate with personnel, coworkers, subordinates, and the general public. Must have leadership and team-building skills. Must be able to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with supervisory personnel, coworkers, subordinates, and the general public. Must be able to handle, resolve, and direct staff on issues and projects. Must be able to maintain self-discipline and objectivity. Must have human resource management skills and abilities. Must be able to use considerable independent judgment within the framework of established policies and objectives in decisions that influence department operations. Must be able to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing, in a diverse range of audiences and settings. Must be able to speak in public, including conducting informal and formal meetings and presentations. Must demonstrate both financial management and budgeting skills. Capable of working a flexible schedule and extended hours, including but not limited to working early mornings, nights, weekends, and holidays in addition to traditional business hours. Will be on-call for facility emergencies. Native American preferred.
