What are the responsibilities and job description for the Youth Mentor position at SBX Youth and Family Services?
Responsibilities:
- Plan, organize, and deliver a variety of educational and recreational activities for young people, ensuring these activities are safe, engaging, and beneficial.
- Build positive relationships with young people, providing support, guidance, and mentoring.
- Work collaboratively with colleagues, parents, and community organizations to support the holistic development of the youth.
- Facilitate group sessions and workshops on topics such as life skills, education, health, and career planning.
- Identify the needs of individual youth and groups, and adapt programs and activities to meet these needs.
- Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of youth programs and activities, making adjustments as necessary.
- Maintain accurate records and reports on youth participation, progress, and outcomes.
- Ensure all activities comply with relevant legislation, policies, and best practices for safeguarding and child protection.
- Provide crisis intervention and support to young people in distress or facing difficult situations.
- Advocate for the needs and rights of young people within the community and with other service providers.
- Organize and participate in community events, outings, and other activities that promote positive development and community engagement for youth.
- Collaborate and maintain confidential relationships with administrators and teachers.
- Must have excellent writing skills.
- Must be willing to work weekends and evenings as required.
- Must have a car and a valid driver’s license.
- Must be willing to commute to Riverside, CA, and Moreno Valley, CA, for work.
Specific Training/Skills:
- Experience in youth work, counseling, social work, or a related field.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
- Ability to build rapport and establish trust with young people.
- Knowledge of adolescent development and issues affecting young people.
- Ability to design and implement engaging and effective youth programs and activities.
- Strong organizational and time management skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Commitment to fostering a supportive and inclusive environment for all youth.
- Ability to handle crisis situations calmly and effectively.
- Evidence of excellent oral, written, and technology skills.
- Ability to organize and work independently in a fast-paced environment.
Education Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in social work, psychology, education, or a related field (preferred).
- Relevant certifications in youth work or related areas (preferred).
- Experience working with young people in a professional and school-based setting.
- Ability to pass a background check and obtain necessary clearances for working with youth.
