Schnabel, a leader in specialty underground construction, is looking for a Design Engineer to provide support for our operations and preconstruction teams designing buildable and cost effective solutions for geostructural scopes of work.
Schnabel was founded in 1959 in Washington DC and has grown to become one of the nation’s top geostructural contractors. Family owned and operated; we are currently looking to add a design engineer to our southern region team in either the Marietta, GA or Houston, TX office. This role will report directly to the Regional Vice President and work closely with our preconstruction and operations team members.
Schnabel’s work includes installation of soil nail walls, piles, lagging, walers, tiebacks, and braces for support of excavation projects. We also take on challenging projects with underpinning, grouting, tunneling, and unique structural support. Candidates having direct construction experience and familiarity with our work are preferred.

Job Responsibilities
- Review project documents including geotechnical exploration reports, project specifications and civil/structural plans for use during design
- Evaluate site conditions and project risks, determine construction methods best suited to the project for ease of construction and risk mitigation
- Use available project data to determine soil properties, perform engineering calculations, and develop designs for both work being performed and work being bid
- Prepare design documents for submittal including shop drawings and design calculations, work plans, reports, and responses to submittals by reviewing parties including redesign or resubmittal of design documents as required
- Respond quickly to submittal review comments and project changes
- Respond quickly to questions from the project team including any conditions that are not in accordance with the design
- Participate in meetings and discussions as required to address project issues related to design and construction
- Prepare other project documents including specifications, means and methods, and testing submittals as required
- Work to improve processes both related to design and construction of projects.
- Develop project and product specific quality management processes for design-build projects
- Provide technical assistance for business development presentations and client meetings
- Bachelor’s in civil engineering with PE
- 5 years of geotechnical and structural design experience
- Experience in geotechnical analysis, specifically in earth retaining structures and slope stability
- In-depth knowledge of the principals and standards of geotechnical engineering, soil and rock mechanics, groundwater hydrology, and foundation design
- Ability and willingness to travel
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
