Academic appointments, including rank, will be determined by the university as a part of the hiring process. Principal faculty will be eligible for promotion and tenure as per Lipscomb University policies commensurate with other faculty of similar academic responsibilities.

Description

The Director of Clinical Education (DCE), who serves as a full-time principal faculty member within the School of Physician Assistant Studies, will be actively involved with the three tenets of higher education: teaching, service, and scholarship. Additionally, the DCE will serve as a critical team member, collectively and collaboratively supporting the mission of the PA program and Lipscomb University. Together with the program director, medical director, existing faculty, and staff, the DCE will also primarily support both the academic and administrative processes required for the provision of the clinical components of the program.

Duties and Responsibilities

The principal faculty member will actively engage in the following duties and responsibilities to the program and university:

Position-Specific Duties:

  • Responsible for the coordination, supervision, and administration of supervised clinical practice experiences during the clinical phase of the program.
  • Recruitment and retention of qualified preceptors and/or clinical sites that allow students to meet learning outcomes for all rotation types.

Teaching:

  • Teaching: providing student instruction
  • Assessment: evaluating student performance
  • Remediation: assuring the availability of remedial instruction and subsequent reassessment

Service:

  • Programmatic Review: Developing, reviewing, and revising as necessary the mission statement, goals, and competencies of the program
  • Programmatic Evaluation: Evaluating the program and supporting the self-study process
  • Curriculum Development: designing, implementing, coordinating, and evaluating the curriculum
  • Admissions: Selecting qualified applicants for admission to the PA program
  • Mentoring: Academic counseling of students
  • Accreditation Maintenance: participating in ongoing activities related to accreditation
  • Committee Involvement: serving as chair and/or member-at-large in various programmatic and institution-wide committees

Scholarship:

  • Maintaining continuing medical education (CME) requirements outlined by the individual’s certifying agency
  • Participating in professional development directly related to PA education

Other:

  • Maintaining certification and Tennessee licensure
  • Engaging in other activities as assigned by the program director
  • Support the mission and function of the institution and program

Education

Required:

  • Master’s Degree in Physician Assistant Studies, or
  • Doctor of Medicine/Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine

Experience

Required:

  • Minimum three years of documented clinical experience
  • Current NCCPA certification or current Board Certification from ABMS or AOA-related specialty
  • Licensure, or eligibility for licensure, in the State of TN as a PA, MD, or DO

Preferred:

  • Previous involvement in higher education
  • Previous experience with clinical education in Physician Assistant programs.
