The Buyer creates purchase orders and manages raw material inventories to support the production schedule. This role is responsible for ensuring Purchase Orders (POs) and blanket releases are placed in a timely fashion to support the production schedule for assigned products. The Buyer monitors supplier performance and raises any issues that would impact the supply chain and product availability. This position reviews product demand and places orders with enough lead-time to take advantage of transit modes and costing to favorably impact pricing for inbound freight. The Buyer works closely with production planning to ensure that they are informed of any disruptions in material flow so that timely counteractions required to the production schedule can be made. This role also follows all procurement guidelines around Supplier Relationship Management (SRM) practices and also monitors supplier Key Performance Indicators (KPIs).
Duties and Responsibilities |
- Create, maintain, and distribute POs and delivery schedules to suppliers.
- Update material attributes within the Enterprise Resource Planner (ERP) system so the Material Requirements Planner (MRP) module functions effectively.
- Monitor in-house material inventory levels vs target inventory, managing an action plan to reach target.
- Ensure any pull-in or push-out of materials based on changes in requirements for production.
- Forecast raw material requirements and coordinate with suppliers mitigating supply concerns.
- Work with Quality on material out of specs and coordinate vendor returns as necessary.
- Consult with department leaders to determine delivery timelines on new products.
- Collaborate with Quality and Regulatory groups on qualifying new suppliers and new products.
- Setup Supplier Relationship Management system (SRM) reviews with key suppliers.
- Collaborate with team on financial performance efforts.
- Provide professional insight into market trends to better source and evaluate product and timing of agreements.
Required Qualifications |
- Bachelor’s degree in Procurement, Supply Chain or related field, or commensurate combination of education and work experience.
- 3 years of progressively responsible experience in Supply Chain/Logistics.
- 3 years’ experience in procurement/purchasing.
- Intermediate Microsoft Office and ERP system skills.
- Strong analytical skills to understand the dynamic nature of materials and anticipate future needs.
- Demonstrated organizational, analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
- Demonstrated ability to work in a fast-paced environment driving continuous improvement.
- Proven ability to interact with a wide variety of people in different teams with shifting priorities.
- Good listening and collaboration skills.
Preferred Qualifications |
- Certified Purchasing Manager (CPM) or Certified Professional in Supply Management (CPSM) professional designation.
- Knowledge of Lean Manufacturing concepts.
- Experience in food manufacturing or vitamin, mineral, and supplement industry.
- Membership in the Institute for Supply Management (ISM) or the American Purchasing Society.
- Continuous improvement experience.
