Accountant:

Under the direction of the Director of Business Services, plans, coordinates and participates in the accounting and business operations of the District.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Primary responsibility is to manage and process payroll.
  • Assist District personnel with financial activity, proper expenditures coding, document preparation and other accounting-related activities
  • Assist the Director of Business Services with special financial, statistical and analytical studies
  • Participate in the maintenance of financial control records on funds received through State and Federal programs
  • Prepare financial information for use in negotiations
  • Prepare monthly attendance reports for Board County Office of Education, and State reports 3 times yearly, for review by the Director of Business Services
  • Coordinate State mandated claims
  • Coordinate fixed asset activity
  • Reconcile, verify and maintain Health and Welfare benefits and G/L accounts
  • Prepare and maintain general subsidiary ledger accounts; take accounts payable to County Office of Education and pick up prepared warrants
  • Prepare district deposits at County Auditor. Enter transfers, deposits, stale dated warrants as necessary
  • Prepare warrant demands from properly authorized invoices; maintain warrant register; verify account balances on purchase requisitions, audit open purchase orders to validate and ensure accuracy of encumbrance versus actual year to date expenses; audit invoices by checking or verifying extensions and matching with purchase orders; maintain invoice records and files
  • Maintain and file records for accounts payable, payroll, cash records and all other records related to duties above.
  • Maintain purchasing file. Locate materials and order materials upon request
  • Perform related duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of:

  • Generally accepted accounting principles
  • Financial and statistical record-keeping techniques
  • Modern office practices, procedures and equipment
  • Operation of a computer and assigned software
  • General accounting, budget and business functions of a school district
  • Preparation of financial statements and comprehensive accounting reports
  • Oral and written communication skills

Ability to:

  • Prepare accounting statements
  • Plan, coordinate and participate in the accounting operations of the District
  • Maintain accurate financial and statistical records and statements
  • Verify, reconcile, balance, audit and adjust assigned accounts
  • Perform accounts payable and payroll functions
  • Communicate effectively both orally and in writing
  • Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others
  • Work independently with little direction
  • Operate word processing, spreadsheet and database management software
  • Plan and organize work
  • Meet schedules and time lines
  • Operate a computer and other office equipment
  • Work confidentially with discretion

Experience:

Experience in payroll processing required. Public School experience preferred.

Any combination equivalent to a bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance or related field and three years experience in the preparation and maintenance of financial and accounting records is desirable.
