SYSTEMS ENGINEER

SCOUT is building a new way to see and operate in space: with a new paradigm of data empowering every satellite to do its part in making space safer. We are a rapidly-growing team deploying real solutions which will transform spaceflight, and we are looking for a Systems Engineer to serve as a key solutions architect for SCOUT's relative navigation and flight dynamics capabilities.

This work requires awareness and control of our own spacecraft dynamics, as well as relative dynamics of resident space objects at various ranges: at proximity, rendezvous, parallel, intersecting, or entirely separate orbits. This role will support the SCOUT engineering team and shape the direction of our industry-leading space situational awareness and see-and-avoid capabilities.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Work collaboratively in multidisciplinary teams to represent the satellite system
• Define scope, system requirements, and spacecraft/mission-level operations
• Own full systems operational knowledge, fault detection, and alert architecture
• Own operations throughout ground integration, test, launch, and on-orbit mission operations
• Support on-orbit operations throughout the life of the satellites
• Create and maintain detailed project schedules ensuring that all assigned personnel are aware of theirs tasks and deadlines, identifying required resources to meet those deadlines
• Maintain holistic system architecture documentation, interface control documents, and integration mapping for various spaceflight subsystems
• Support integration and test in the manufacturing, customer facilities, integration, and launch site to ensure mission success
• Define and perform checkouts to integrate hardware and software on the satellite
• Design and develop flight representative simulations using software-in-the-loop or hardware-in-the-loop testbeds to validation operations for flight
• Improvement and creation of tool chains to autonomously monitor and execute operations and process data for analysis

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

• Bachelor’s degree in an engineering discipline, physics, or equivalent
• 5 years of experience in system level engineering development and/or hands on system level testing (including internships, design/build/compete collegiate project teams)
• 5 years of experience authoring and reviewing software (including internships, design/build/compete collegiate project teams, academic/personal projects)
• Prior flight program experience (developing systems which have flown, or operating on-orbit systems)

PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

• Systems-level knowledge of space vehicles and redundancy architects
• Familiarity with control, command and data handling, and communication systems for small satellite missions
• Experience with satellite attitude determination and orbital mechanics
• 2 years of experience in a test/automation/integration engineering role
• Familiarity with Linux based operating systems
• Experience with automating complex systems
• Experience with real time operations on space qualified vehicles or other highly complex systems
• Creative, passionate problem solver that can thrive leading multidisciplinary teams through fast paced, autonomously driven, and demanding design and integration campaigns
• Strong written and verbal communication skills

Our positions are based in the Alexandria, Virginia area, although we are predominantly remote until our new facilities are established. Longer-term remote work can be negotiated.
