What are the responsibilities and job description for the Controls Technician - Travel position at SCS Engineers?
What we are looking for
We are looking for a Technician who will be working under the direction of SCS RMC (Remote Monitoring Control) group to implement technology solutions for clients. RMC is a growing division for SCS, and this is an exciting time to join this team! This is a traveling position (90% of the time), but a lot of the sites are in the Northeast, but travel can be nationwide at times. We prefer that you live in the Northeast for this role.
How you can make an impact
- Implement technology solutions for our clients, often in the field (typically landfill environment). These technology solutions include:
- SCADA systems
- Control systems
- Provide thorough documentation of your work.
- Coordinate field conditions with your work.
- Complete field activities, often working by yourself. Ability to travel up to 90%.
- Control systems and SCADA systems
- Installation and startup work typically including:
- Cabinet installation
- Conduit and wiring installation
- Radio system installation
- PLC, HMI, and radio programming
- System startup, testing, and commissioning
- Troubleshooting field components such as:
- Flares
- Compressors
- Pump Systems
- Installation and startup work typically including:
- Control systems and SCADA systems
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Hands on experience in one or more of the following categories:
- Control systems
- Installing, commissioning, and troubleshooting control panels, sensors, conduit, and wiring in the field (preferably outdoor locations)
- Ethernet networking and radios
- PLC and HMI programming, preferably:
- Automation Direct Productivity and DL series PLCs
- Automation Direct Cmore HMIs
- Allen Bradley PLCs and HMIs
- Control system troubleshooting
- Electrical installations
- Installing conduit and necessary hardware in compliance with the NEC code.
- Threading, bending, and installing rigid and IMC conduit.
- Pulling wire and installing medium and low voltage transformers.
- Wiring equipment to OEM specs such as flares, blowers, pumps, compressors, control panels, sensors, etc.
- Knowledge of working in a Class 1 Div. 1 environment and necessary safety precautions.
- Mechanical installations
- Proper leveling, anchoring, and installation according to OEM specs.
- Shaft alignment procedures (experience using a laser system for shaft alignment a plus)
- Threading and installing multiple types of piping - HDPE welding experience a plus.
- Bending and flaring tubing.
- SCADA systems
- Inductive Automation's Ignition software
- Ethernet networking and radios
- Industrial automation communication protocols:
- EtherNet/IP
- Modbus TCP/IP
- SCADA system troubleshooting
- Python programming
- Database scripting and setup
- Control systems
- Intermediate to advanced Microsoft Windows, Word, Excel, Project, and Outlook skills required.
- Ability to comprehend and implement detailed project specifications, adapt to various technologies, and simultaneously work on multiple projects.
- Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
- Attention to details and data accuracy.
- Good communication skills, both verbal and written.
- Demonstrated strong problem-solving skills and creative thinking skills.
- Ability to perform efficiently in a fast-paced, deadline-oriented environment.
- Ability to collaborate and work effectively with other co-workers, departments, or business units.
- Ability to travel up to 90% during the work week. This is a weekly travel job -- generally home on weekends.
Qualifications
- Experience in controls systems required.
- Experience reading mechanical and electrical drawings.
- Experience developing projects in Inductive Automation's Perspective module preferred.
- Related experience including working on landfills preferred.
- Ability to travel 90% of the time required.
- Must meet physical requirements for driving (pick-up truck), walking inspection of improved and unimproved property, lifting and carrying equipment/mechanical components (up to 25 lbs. unassisted), carrying and climbing ladders, operating electric tools (drills, saws, etc.), using hand tools (screwdrivers, wrenches, hammers, etc.) and providing services under varying weather conditions.
- A valid driver's license with a driving record in good standing required.

Pay range for this position is $24/hr to $29/hr depending on experience and location. This does not include bonuses or our Employee Stock Ownership Plan.
