AVP, Controller-Accounting Department Summary: The AVP, Controller is the leader of the Accounting Department and is responsible for the credit union's financial records, reports and accounting systems, ensuring all accounting policies and procedures are in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles. The AVP, Controller is the primary liaison for financial reporting with auditors, examiners, and senior management. This role ensures effective controls are in place to protect the credit union's financial assets and mitigate risk. In addition, the AVP, Controller provides research and analysis in the areas of financial trends, balance sheet allocation, cost-benefit analysis, interest rate risk, and product profitability. Profile: Leads, trains, evaluates, coaches, professionally develops and motivates staff to attain department goals. Sets and monitors performance goals. Promotes a work environment that encourages involvement, initiative and teamwork. Builds career development paths for assigned staff. Oversees the development and administration of financial and cost accounting systems including fixed assets and accounts payable. Oversees timely and accurate accounting and financial reporting, including quarterly Call Reports, annual audited financial statements, and tax reporting. Acts as a liaison with external auditors, professional service vendors (e.g., tax attorneys) and financial institutions on accounting, audit, tax, and regulatory matters. Serves as the Accounting liaison on internal projects which require inputs to the core system or ancillary accounting systems (e.g., the GL software system) to ensure proper recording of transactions. Communicates and interacts with Senior Management and other departments on accounting, budgetary, audit, and regulatory matters. Participates in preparing and monitoring the annual budget and in forecasting future projections. Participates in the preparation of internal reports for presentation and analysis at ALCO and other management meetings. Ensures effective invoicing and expense reimbursement systems are in place for the credit union.

Accounting and financial management skills Strong analytical skills, and the ability to gather, analyze and present financial, statistical and economic data in clear and concise fashion. Thorough understanding of accounting information and ability to exercise judgment, initiative and tact in dealing with staff and management. Ability to provide leadership, support, motivation and professional development to the Accounting staff. Ability to effectively communicate with all levels of staff.
Supervisory Relationships: Reports directly to the SVP, Chief Financial Officer. Direct supervisory responsibility for Manager, Accounting. Overall management responsibility for all department staff.
Experience and Education: Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or economics or a related field or equivalent experience. Minimum 7 years progressively responsible top management experience in auditing, accounting or controller duties, preferably in the financial services industry. Direct experience in financial investments and asset/liability management required. CPA training or certification preferred.
Working Conditions: Work is generally performed within an office environment, with standard office equipment available and usually sedentary in nature. Requires traveling to Credit Union branches and other venues, and attending special and community-related events during business hours, evenings and/or weekends.
