Job Title
Bivalve hatchery/nursery technician for a production facility.
Reports To
The hatchery/nursery technician will report to senior biologist/hatchery manager.
Job Overview
This position calls for a motivated and hardworking individual(s) with marine science, biology, husbandry, or similar background for a bivalve production facility. The hatchery/nursery technician is responsible for the daily maintenance of the hatchery/nursery; including, but not limited to: broodstock, larval, seed production and microalgae duties. These duties include stock management through all phases, tank cleaning, tank filling, moving hoses, operating pumps, handling disinfectant chemicals and fertilizers, performing algae inoculations, etc. Will be working in a PHYSICALLY CHALLENGING ENVIRONMENT. Must be willing to work WEEKENDS and some HOLIDAYS. This position is FULL-TIME offering $15/ hr.
Responsibilities and Duties
- Large-scale microalgae cultivation and maintenance.
- Proper tank/equipment cleaning, preparation and storing.
- Brood stock/Nursery/Larval cleaning, feeding, maintenance, & sampling.
- General data collection and laboratory record taking.
- Collecting samples and performing stock assessments (i.e. algae cell, larval, and seed count counting).
- Handling disinfectant chemicals and fertilizers.
- Preparation of sales- seed size grading/sieving, counting, volumizing, bagging, labeling, etc.
- Monitor the overall health of the hatchery/nursery.
- Working on slippery and uneven terrain (steps, decking, plumbing, etc.).
- Keep a clean and neat work environment following each task and end of the day.
- Recording procedures.
- Maintaining water quality- pH control, conditioning, filtration maintenance, line cleaning, etc.
Qualifications
- Past marine science, biology, fisheries, or any other related field aquatic husbandry production experience.
- Requires a team player and positive attitude.
- Ability to willingly and promptly take directions, change tasks, prioritize workload, and work efficiently.
- Basic laboratory skills.
- Intermediate math skills.
- Experience composing SOP manuals.
- Motivated, driven, hardworking, detail-oriented, and focused.
- Willingness to work weekends.
- Must be able to work in hot, humid, wet, and challenging environments.
- Lift ~50 lbs. or more on a frequent basis.
- Must be US citizen.
