What you get to do:
As an Associate Aviculturist, you’ll truly be able to spread your wings as you handle the daily care of the avian collection in your assigned area. You will:
Observe and report behavioral and physiological trends
Maintain records, prepare written reports, compile/analyze historical data
Cleans, maintains and enhances exhibits and animal holding areas
Understand individual species requirements and ensure habitats are appropriate
Assist with veterinary treatments and procedures
Capture and restrain birds safely and proficiently
Prepare for breeding season and monitor and evaluate nests, eggs and chicks in exhibits
Assist with tours, camps and education programs
Give presentations to guests on avian management and natural history
Train other team members in technical aspects of aviculture
Communicate professionally and effectively with Ambassadors, vendors and our guests
Perform other duties as assigned
What it takes to succeed:
At least 18 years of age
High school diploma or equivalent
6 months zoological experience or equivalent
Bachelor’s degree in a related field is preferred
Valid driver’s license
Strong communication, math, guest service and multitasking skills
Ability to identify birds by color-coded bands
What else is important:
Able to lift, push, pull and/or carry up to 50 lbs.
Position engages in extensive walking and standing throughout entire work shift and climb/ascend heights, if needed
You will perform the following physical activities: kneeling, squatting, bend floor-to waist/waist-to-overhead, reach overhead, simple grasp and fine hand manipulation tasks (use of tools/keyboard/writing)
Able to work indoors and outdoors, in varying weather, to include extreme heat
Position may be exposed to fumes, dust, odors and cold/heat temperature extremes
Will perform cleaning duties; including use of cleaning chemicals
Will work flexible schedules/hours based on business needs, to include opening, mid-, and closing shifts; nights, weekends, and holidays
Flexible in work locations as placement will depend on business needs and career development opportunities
