Founded in 1998 by three chefs, Second Helpings remains true to its core mission while the ability to serve our community has continued to grow. In fiscal year 2023-2024 to date we have rescued over 3.1 million pounds of food and distributed over one million meals through our 100 area partners.
The Second Helpings building is a vibrant and active one, fostering a collaborative work environment. The organization relies on a steady and dedicated volunteer corps that is in the building during most open hours, and it sees present and former culinary job training students coming and going regularly. Food and food culture are ever-present, and lunch is available on most days.
JOB SUMMARY
Working with the Food Rescue Team and at the direction of the Sr. Hub Coordinator will facilitate the distribution of meals, bulk food and other items for the partner agencies, and receive and safely store prepared and perishable food donated to Second Helpings.
WHAT YOU'LL DO includes the following. Other duties may be assigned.
- Receives and logs food donations and stores in the appropriate place. Inspects food items to maintain quality standards and sanitation regulations.
- Coordinates with the Sr. Hub Coordinator on sorting, selection, and storage of donated food.
- Assists with the delivery of meals to partner agencies by working with volunteers and staff drivers to ensure that all items are in the delivery vehicles and delivered with food safety standards adhered to.
- At the direction of the Sr. Hub Coordinate, work with Partner Agency team and Food Rescue staff in activities related to re-direction distribution of food to partner agencies.
- Along with the Sr. Hub Coordinator and CJT Manager, monitors inventory of food for the Hunger Relief and Culinary Job-Training Programs. Communicate to appropriate staff when key inventory is low.
- At the direction of the Sr. Hub Coordinator, assists in directing volunteers in cleaning and organizing of the hub coolers and freezer, volunteer drivers, driver companions, bread area volunteers.
- Follows all safe food handling procedures; maintain ServSafe certification.
- Maintains cleanliness of the hub area.
- Provide assistance in other areas, including delivery of food to partner agencies and pick-up of excess prepared food from donor sites as requested and when time permits.
Requirements
WHAT YOU'LL BRING to perform the job successfully:
- High school graduate or equivalent
- Valid Indiana Operators drivers license plus a safe motor vehicle report and you can meet the commercial insurance age requirements
- Must have or be able to achieve a ServSafe Food Handler certification
- Organized and able to handle multiple priorities
- Good verbal communication
- Keep neat, accurate written records
- Demonstrate common sense and good judgement
- Able to interact positively with people of all backgrounds, cultural groups, and economic levels
- Lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, using adaptive equipment or assistance if more than that
- Be physically able to perform all essential job functions
- Tolerance of weather conditions (heat, cold, wet, airborne particles), moderate to loud noise, or moving mechanical parts.

This is a full time hourly position with a compensation of $18.00/hour.
