Summary: Under direction of the Blood Center Operations Director, the Medical Services Specialist - EMT-P or RN/LPN is responsible for execution of medical duties and adherence to quality standards. Additionally, the Medical Services Specialist - EMT-P or RN/LPN is responsible for the training of employees as it pertains to the medical aspects of collection, manufacturing, and distribution of blood and blood products. Ensures duties are conducted in compliance with Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), regulatory agencies, and accreditation bodies.

  • Contributes to organizational mission via professionalism in customer service interactions and accuracy of work. The employee must be courteous, conscientious, and professional when dealing with both internal and external customers. Promotes teamwork and communication. Fosters a team environment to facilitate effective management of the donation process as well as the manufacturing and distribution of blood and blood products
  • Collects, manufactures, and aids in the distribution of blood and blood products
  • Demonstrates understanding of established Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) and company Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), to ensure blood products meet safety, purity, and potency requirements. Follows SOPs during performance of job tasks
  • Complies with safety procedures, personnel practices, and confidentiality policies
  • Works independently to determine donor suitability following established protocols. Documents results concurrently and handle exceptions according to established protocols
  • Aids in the management of adverse events including providing aid to donors during adverse events, completing the necessary documentation, and conducting proper follow-up
  • Reviews test results and takes appropriate action on positive viral marker reports including state health department notification as required, proper donor notification according to CFR
  • Conducts donor counseling regarding suitability as needed
  • Executes clinical research under the direction of the Medical Director and/or Chief Scientific Officer
  • Provides on-call medical coverage for assigned services
  • Participates in mandatory training, retraining, staff meetings, continuing education, and cGMP training. Documents attendance appropriately. Completes competency testing on time as required
  • Performs data entry associated with component production, labeling, storage and shipping ensuring accurate and complete manufacturing records.
  • Ensures suitability and accurate labeling of products for release and distribution.
  • Conducts initial skills training, refresher training, and routine assessment of employees in preparation for competency sign-off by the quality department
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Qualifications: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty and responsibility satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge skill, and/or ability required.

Education and/or Experience: Currently certified/licensed in the state of employment and according to state requirements as an Emergency Medical Technician, Licensed Practical Nurse, Licensed Vocation Nurse, Registered Nurse, Nurse Practitioners or Physician Assistant.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations and Designations:

  • EMT OR RN/LPN/LVN degree and state licensure
  • CPR or ability to obtain

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Meet and/or exceed organizational goals as it pertains to Biologics collection, manufacturing, and distribution
  • Proficient computer skills including knowledge of Microsoft Office applications
  • Ability to follow complex oral and written instructions
  • Ability to speak, write, read, and understand English
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing
  • Demonstrated excellent customer service skills; ability to organize and prioritize; proficient computer skills including Microsoft Office and various web applications
  • Demonstrate dependability, punctuality, and cooperation

Physical Requirements: Required to regularly stand, use hands, reach with arm, and talk and hear. Frequently required to sit, stoop, crouch, kneel. Must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Vision abilities required include close vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

Environmental Requirements: Possible exposure to bloodborne pathogens.
