What are the responsibilities and job description for the Splunk Engineer (Hybrid) position at Securian Financial?
*This position is eligible to be hired at the Sr. Analyst or Consultant level depending on qualifications and skillsets.
Position Summary:
Securian Financial is looking for a Splunk Engineer to join our Log Management team within our Cyber Security division! As part of Securian's CyberOps organization, the Log Management team is responsible for implementing and maintaining the end-to-end delivery of log data from source systems to a centralized security information and event management (SIEM) system. The team defines and implements the delivery mechanisms for logs, monitors those delivery mechanisms for interruptions and errors, and manages the health of the SIEM system. The technologies utilized by this team includes Splunk, Syslog, Github, AWS Cloudformation, AWS SSM, Amazon Kinesis, and Amazon CloudWatch.
Responsibilities include but not limited to:
In this role, you would be expected to be able to manage a Splunk environment hosted in AWS, utilizing AWS management tools to deploy and maintain log management infrastructure. Some of the other responsibilities of this role include:
- Deploying servers and configuration changes via a Continuous Integration/Continuous Delivery ("CI/CD") pipeline (Github and Github Actions).
- Deploying and maintaining Splunk configurations on Universal Forwarders, Heavy Forwarders, Indexers, and Search Heads.
- Maintaining infrastructure and ensuring availability of systems.
- Monitoring for data flow interruptions at various layers of the log delivery pipeline.
- Install and configure Splunk integrations with third-party applications and data.
- Working with data owners to gather ingestion requirements.
- 2 years' experience in administering Linux systems, including familiarity with the Linux command line and ability to write shell scripts.
- Splunk Power User or Administrator Certification (or equivalent experience).
- 1 years' experience administering Splunk (e.g. adding users, adding roles, setting up new ingestions, installing applications).
- Experience using CI/CD tools (e.g. Github, Github Actions).
- Experience using cloud services or virtual-machine ("VM") technologies.
- Experience with Syslog.
- Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with technical and non-technical users.
- Experience in the field of log management (knowledge on parsing, filtering, enrichment).

- Ability to perform grasping tasks throughout the entire work day (examples: handwriting, grasping of equipment/machines, paper manipulation, sorting, folding, handling stacks of paper)
