What are the responsibilities and job description for the Accounting Specialist position at Self-Help Credit Union?
Self-Help is seeking an Accounting Specialist. The Accounting Specialist will assist in the preparation and maintenance of monthly financial statements and will act as a liaison between the operations and accounting/finance team for all accounting needs.
Essential Responsibilities:
- Perform daily reconciliation of bank accounts including clearing stale items, check/share drafts, and processing stop payments.
- Reconcile ATM and Debit/Credit card transactions.
- Perform other various Account reconciliations.
- Perform Daily/Weekly/Monthly processes as needed.
- Create and post journal entries.
- Prepare, file, and maintain business personal property tax records.
- Prepare and file IRA withholdings with State and Federal governments.
- Reconcile loan servicing statements to underlying accounting records.
- Calculate and monitor needed accruals.
- Work with SHCU staff to ensure all general ledger accounts are reconciled.
- Assist with ensuring that monthly financial statements are prepared on a timely and accurate basis.
- Assist with filing quarterly call report with National Credit Union Administration.
- Utilize and apply knowledge of the fundamental doctrines, theories, principles, and terminology of accountancy, including an understanding of how transactions made in other departments affect accounting records.
- Work across multiple accounting and IT systems.
- Respond to information/reporting requests from both internal and external sources, when needed.
- Actively participate in interdepartmental meetings and assessing the impact accounting or procedural changes will have on the team.
- Perform other duties as may be deemed necessary.
Credentials, Experience and Skills:
- Associates degree in accounting and 2 years of accounting experience, Bachelor’s degree, OR an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
- Experience working in banking and with banking core processing software preferred.

- General accounting knowledge. Ability to assist in preparing and analyzing financial statements, operating projections, budgets, and cash flows.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Word and Excel.
- Aptitude to quickly learn new software applications.
- Keen attention to detail.
- Ability to work independently while also working as a productive team member.
- Good organization skills and the ability to juggle multiple priorities and meet deadlines.
- Excellent written and verbal business communication skills.
- Ability and willingness to work beyond normal work hours, as needed.

Physical Requirements:
Frequently requires use of manual dexterity and repetitive motions, primarily with the wrists, hands, and/or fingers. Must be able to occasionally lift and exert force of up to 40 pounds.
