What are the responsibilities and job description for the Electro-Mechanical Buyer position at Semios?
Who we are:
We are a bunch of people who really care about agriculture, food and the challenges facing farming. We want to help farmers with data driven decision making to help nature feed a growing population. Join our team of expert engineers, agronomists, entomologists, crop researchers, and data scientists who are continually conducting research to help drive innovation in agriculture.
Semios is a market leader in leveraging the internet-of-things (IoT) and big data to improve the sustainability and profitability of specialty crops. With 500 million data points being reported by our sensors every day, we leverage our big data analytics, such as in-depth pest and disease modeling, to empower tree fruit and tree nut growers with decision-making tools to minimize resources and risks. We are in a high growth phase with 2021 seeing us expand into Italy, Australia and Spain.
Our innovative work has received several industry awards:
- AgTech Breakthrough Awards Program (2021) – Selected as winner of the "Pest Management Solutions of the Year" award.
- Global CleanTech Top 100 (2020) – Identified as one of the companies best positioned to solve tomorrow’s clean technology challenges.
- Google Accelerator (2020) – Selected as 1 of 9 companies for the inaugural Google for Startups Accelerator Canada cohort, who are all using technology to solve complex challenges.
One of our partners produced this short video which shows what we do and our positive environmental impact.
We know our journey is only achievable by having a great team who shares ideas, tries new things and learns as we go.
Who you are:
Motivated by meaningful work, you are looking for more than just a job; you want to work for a dynamic, growing company that finds solutions to real-life problems, such as helping the world reduce the use of pesticides and helping nature feed a growing population. Your ideal work environment includes a collaborative team spirit with the opportunity to learn and grow as you take the initiative to try new things.
As an Electro-Mechanical Sourcing Specialist, you are an impact player connecting our field services technicians and customers, to vendors who will provide a great product and service. You are the bridge between supply chain, manufacturing and field engineering teams during the design and the manufacturing transfer phases of in-field solutions. You come from an Engineering, Supply Chain, Manufacturing and/or Production environment with a strong technical aptitude.
You are energized by working in cross-functional settings with internal and external teams globally (field services, technology partners for whom we install equipment, suppliers & manufacturing partners). You demonstrate initiative, communicate well to various audiences, and love learning new things.
What you will do:
Connect Field Services (our technicians installing our product in the field) with manufacturing
- Coordinate with field services technical specialists, and mechanical engineers when needed, to capture and document field install practices - including simple bill-of-materials.
- Brainstorm and propose solutions to make installs or manufacturing simpler or more robust. When appropriate, build or test simple prototypes to demonstrate these ideas. If the teams love them, bring them to production!
- Engage with electro-mechanical suppliers to collect options and samples for field services and/or engineering to evaluate.
Supply chain sourcing
- Maintain and extend close relationships with key suppliers to best align Semios’ needs with market-leading product direction. Under the guidance of the Operations Manager, proactively track industry trends in materials, connectors, cables, enclosures, etc
- Performs NPI & sustaining Design-for-Supply-Chain functions such as selection of simple alternate source components for global localization, cost reduction, product consolidation, or improved reliability of supply. For example, sourcing equivalent conduits, hose clamps, or automotive-grade custom cable assemblies in Australia or Europe.
- Source manufacturers and vendors, and contribute to their qualification and approval.
- Coordinate requirements and reports (e.g.Reach/RoHS compliance) with vendors as required.
Support receiving process inspections
- Develop simple incoming quality inspection process for warehouse technicians receiving electro-mechanical product in warehouse. Work with quality engineers to establish sample rate, and acceptance criteria.
- Resolve quality issues with suppliers.
This role requires up to 20% travel within North America, to connect with field crews and manufacturing, and the role must be able to travel to the US and Mexico on short notice. This role may require occasional travel overseas (~annual).
Requirements
We want you to succeed, so you will need:
- 2 years relevant ‘hands on’ experience in an electro-mechanical design or manufacturing role.
- Excellent technical writing skills, communicating BOMs, test criteria, sourcing requirements with internal and external customers.
- Able to efficiently ingest and understand 3D CAD files, with the ability to modify.
- Highly organized with strong attention to detail and accuracy
- Must be self-motivated with a high desire for results and be able to work with little supervision.
- Degree in Mechatronics, mechanical engineering or equivalent experience.
Nice to have:
- Basic lab assembly e.g. for jigs, mechanical prototypes.
- Experience with EU REACH, RoHS, CE requirements and audits
- Experience with ERP systems
Benefits
Why this is the opportunity for you:
- Sleep better knowing you're making the world a better place through more sustainable food production.
