Position Description

Serco is seeking a full-time Senior Mechanical Engineer to support the Naval Oceanographic Office (NAVO) at John C. Stennis Space Center in South Mississippi by providing expertise in areas of design, modification, repair, testing, and trial support of oceanographic data collection assets.

 

This position is contingent upon your ability to obtain/maintain/transfer your Secret clearance (U.S. citizenship is required).

 

As Senior Mechanical engineer, you will lead design and modification of mechanical components for various oceanographic data collection assets as well as develop machinery to insert or extract assets from operational and test environments.  You will apply subject matter expertise and engineering principles to design instruments, controls, and equipment supporting deployable systems in various labs, on ships and ocean vessels, and in saltwater environments. You will conduct product testing and create models, and interface with component vendors to ensure mission requirements are met.

In this role, you will:

  • Develop and analyze system and mechanical designs, specifications, and technical data to prepare various systems are ready for developmental/operational testing.
  • Create, modify, and use mechanical drawings and associated software and tools to manage design configurations.
  • Analyze results from data collection systems and capabilities under test/evaluation to ensure performance successfully meets engineering specifications and operational requirements.
  • Investigate system failures, evaluate corrective alternatives, and implement actions to ensure systems maintain safe, effective operations and minimize/eliminate potential future system failures.
  • Work within technical support teams to meet field mission requirements and resolve technical issues.
  • Formulate methods and processes which will increase operational effectiveness, safety, efficiency, and readiness.
  • Perform platform and payload upgrades as requested by the Govt. customer.
  • Travel as needed to meet customer needs.
  • Typically reports to a manager or head of a unit/department.
  • Perform additional duties and responsibilities as assigned by Serco Management and Govt. customers. 

Qualifications

To be successful in this role, you will have:

  • Bachelors Degree in an Engineering discipline plus 10-12 years of relevant work experience.
  • Must be able to obtain / maintain an active SECRET level clearance. (U.S. Citizenship is required)
  • Knowledge of electrical principles, methods, and techniques within a specific area of expertise.
  • Knowledge of relevant tools, equipment, hardware, and engineering design software.
  • Must be able to support emergent travel as required for up to 10% of time annually.  

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • Familiarity with Navy research and development concepts, practices, procedures, and testing.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft programs (Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.).
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office suite programs, MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
