Position Title:              NANOGrav Physics Frontiers Center Postdoctoral Research

FLSA Status:                Exempt 

 Location:                      US remote position.                                                                                                                

Position Summary 

The SETI Institute is seeking a postdoctoral scholar to work on projects related to pulsar timing and in close collaborate with the North American Nanohertz Observatory for Gravitational Waves (NANOGrav). 

 The position is funded through the NANOGrav Physics Frontier Center (PFC); The goal of the NANOGrav PFC is to characterize the low-frequency gravitational-wave universe through radio-timing observations of pulsars. The postdoctoral researcher will be part of a diverse community of NANOGrav members in the United States and Canada and will benefit from mentoring by, and collaboration with, researchers at a range of institutions. The postdoctoral researcher will be expected to work closely with the head of the project at the SETI Institute and to play a key role in driving forward its newest data set while maintaining an independent research portfolio in pulsar timing array science.

 Candidates with experience in pulsar timing and/or pulsar timing array science are strongly encouraged to apply. Postdoctoral researchers are appointed to renewable one-year terms, up to a total of three years. Funding for collaboration and conference travel will be available.

Salary Range for this position: $55,000- $65,000

 Responsibilities

  • Perform independent research relating to pulsar timing array science.
  • Assist in the development of NANOGrav’s next and most sensitive data set.
  • Attend teleconferences as needed in collaboration with other researchers.
  • Attend research conferences and present the results of research findings.
  • Prepare results for publication in scientific journals.
  • Contribute to NANOGrav’s education and public outreach and/or diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives.

    Qualifications 

  • PhD in Astronomy, Physics, or related fields.
  • Experience in astrophysics research in pulsar timing and/or pulsar timing array science. 
  • A minimum of 3 years can be as part of graduate thesis research.
  • Experience in Python programming language and data analytics.
  • Outstanding verbal and written communication skills.
  • Experience in science outreach and education.
  • Must be able to work remotely in collaboration with other researchers/scientists. 

 Physical Requirements

  • Constantly perform desk-based computer tasks.
  • Sort, file paperwork, grasp lightly, and use fine manipulation, lift, carry, push and pull objects that weigh up to 25 lbs.
  • Stand, walk, reach, or work above shoulders and use a telephone.
