Overview/ Job Responsibilities
The Avionics System Test Engineer will design, execute, debug, and analyze system level avionics tests from a collection of requirements for NASA’s Space Launch System (SLS). These test cases have a software component that execute in various labs including the Systems Integration Laboratory (SIL) Hardware in the Loop facility to verify the integrated avionics. The software test cases will also need to be designed, implemented, and tested for correct working order.
This position is responsible for providing services and support for the Software Systems Engineering Branch (ES51). This branch is responsible for the requirements, test and verification, configuration and data management, software process and systems engineering, and day of launch operations support for the Space Launch System (SLS) Integrated Avionics Test Facilities (IATF). This engineering support will be conducted within an existing operational Government owned and managed facility housed at MSFC. All task support shall comply with the Software Systems Engineering Branch Organizational Work Instructions (OWIs) and safety procedures. Personnel will be required to be active participants in MSFC’s safety program and International Standards Organization (ISO). Work processes are governed by Software Systems Engineering Branch OWIs. Personnel will be required to stay up-to-date on all required training, abide by branch Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs) and attend branch safety meetings.
This is a senior position that requires broad technical capability to perform Test Development, Test Conduction and Test Reporting of real-time HWIL systems, as well as good project management skills to define and plan the activities. The ability to track and report progress and timely completion of milestones is essential. Problem solving, troubleshooting, and hands-on use of test equipment will be required. This position will also require the development and execution of simulation based tests and provide engineering support to augment a team of Government engineers.
Activities associated with this position include but are not limited to the following:
- Become a subject matter expert on a library of system tests in the Avionics System Test Library. This will include in depth knowledge of the system tests and how they work functionally on the SLS.
- Spend time in the HWIL labs and become proficient in executing and debugging a library of system tests.
- Be an ambitious self-starter and product owner of a library of avionics system tests. Be willing to initiate contact with other groups to resolve problems.
- Work well within a team environment.
- Participate in defining verification/validation information such as Detailed Verification Objectives and success criteria.
- Design, execute, and debug test plans, including pre-test setups such as instrumentation, data acquisition, software loading/configuration and post-test activities such as data archiving and data analysis.
- Develop test software using a language such as Python, XML, or C.
- Write technical documents including test plans, procedures and reports to address verification requirements.
- Review program/project documents and provide relevant comments from a test perspective.
- Develop and use data reduction and manipulation tools.
- Assist in producing integrated schedules, management reports and budget reports.
- Produce, archive, and distribute test data as appropriate to support requirement verification closure.
- Evaluate test data to correlate with test findings and investigate potential anomalies.
- Participate in or conduct meetings to support the above activities.
- Use a Linux based platform. Familiar with basic Linux commands including vi.
- Have experience with Version control such as Git.
Minimum Qualifications
Degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or related field is required. Degree from an ABET-accredited university is preferred. Typically the educational requirements are the equivalent of a Ph.D., with a minimum 14 years experience, Masters with at least 18 years experience, or a BS with at least 20 years of experience.
Minimum 4 years of experience using simulation in HWIL systems testing or similar test lab experience.
Demonstrated expertise in:
- Analysis of Requirements and Detailed Verification Objectives for Testability and Test Development
- Development of test plans and procedures
- Developing software test cases via a language such as XML, C, or Python
- Writing technical documents associated with testing
- Troubleshooting and testing in support of distributed computing and simulation of launch vehicle and spacecraft systems or applicable systems.
- Debugging system level tests
- Using a Linux based platform.
- Ability to perform hands-on integration and troubleshooting support, including proficiency with basic lab hardware and software diagnostic tools.
- Ability to analyze test results. Perform detail analysis to close Detailed Verification Objectives.
- Ability to work as part of a team and as an individual contributor.
- Microsoft Office products including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
Ability to perform hands-on integration and troubleshooting support, including proficiency with basic lab hardware and software diagnostic tools.
