Civil Air Patrol (“CAP”) is the auxiliary program for the U.S. Air Force and, through their Cadet Program, is available to youth as young as age 11. The Mission of the CAP Cadet Program is to “transform youth into dynamic Americans and aerospace leaders” through a multi-faceted curriculum in leadership, aerospace (STEM, flight, and rocketry), fitness, and character. While CAP is accessible to all youth nationwide as a community service organization outside of school, Sheldon ISD was one of the pioneer school districts to offer CAP as a year-long middle school course/three-year continuing elective program for Middle School Physical Education (PE) credit. Youth joining CAP are eligible for lifetime membership in the Civil Air Patrol but are not obligated to do so nor to join the military upon completion (though C.E. King High School does feature an active, accredited, and award-winning Air Force JROTC program that features many former Sheldon ISD CAP Cadets). CAP Cadets do have uniform requirements on select school days and have after-school, weekend, and/or summer activities periodically as part of their training.
