CORE RESPONSIBILITIES AND TASKS
Conduct quality testing in compliance with ASTM methods, work instructions, and product data sheets to determine if the coating is applied according to specifications. Test methods include:
Dry Film Thickness (DJH, Tooke Gauge, Fischerscope, & SpecMetrix)
Solvent Resistance (MEK Rubs – Hand and Machine)
Fabrication (T-Bends)
Reverse Impact
Pencil Hardness
Field Adhesion Testing
Color
Gloss
Chalk
Organize site inspections with applicators, customers, contractors & building owners. Ensure that roof access will be available (Ex: Ladder, Lift, etc).
Plan and schedule travel to arrive at the building inspections in a timely manner. (Travel up to 75% is required across the US and occasionally Canada).
Prepare for site inspections by ensuring that you have all necessary test equipment.
Provide written reports to the Claims Manager that outline your observations and results from sample testing and site inspections.
Update the master claims spreadsheet as necessary.
Communicate frequently with Claims Manager, Sales Reps, lab personnel, Technical Service Reps, & Coil Leadership to obtain pertinent information and discuss your inspection results.
Obtain necessary information and documents from Valtrack to conduct investigations.
Assist with Claims Manager duties when they are out of office.
Investigate QC history of paint batches and obtain absolute color values for fade claims in ECC.
Research historical warranties to determine if inspection results exceed the warranty limits.
Assist lab personnel and Quality Excellence group on special projects as necessary.
Work with Claims Manager to prioritize panel testing and inspection order.
Ensure that test equipment used in the field is properly calibrated.
Work closely with Sherwin-Williams legal team and participate in depositions regarding claims when necessary.
Communicate with Sherwin-Williams analytical lab and fill out Analytical Workflow Submission Form when additional testing is necessary to obtain root cause of failure.
Ability to use discretion while communicating with building owners and maintain composure while dealing with upset individuals.
Provide answers to customers pertaining to specific questions regarding issues in the field.
Assist paint contractors with questions about warranty re-paint jobs when necessary.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS
FORMAL EDUCATION: (GENERALLY, IF RELEVANT EXPERIENCE IS ACCEPTABLE, THE CANDIDATE MUST HAVE THREE YEARS OF WORK EXPERIENCE FOR EVERY ONE YEAR OF COLLEGE EDUCATION REQUIRED)
Required:
- High School or GED equivalent
Preferred:
- Associate or Trade degree in Engineering or Field Technician areas
- Bachelor degree in Science, Engineering or Metallurgical fields
KNOWLEDGE & EXPERIENCE:
Required:
- Must have at least 5 plus years of experience in Coil coating products development, Operations, Quality, Technical, or Technical Service
- Flexible work schedule to adapt to prioritization changes and needs
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to manage multiple tasks and prioritize appropriately
- Previous direct customer interaction
- 0-5 Years of “meeting expectations” or better performance appraisals
Preferred:
- Experience in one or more of the following areas: Plant Support Lab, Quality Control Lab, R&D Lab, Applications Engineering, Raw Material Technical Service, metal substrate Pre-Treatment or Coatings Application
- Demonstrated problem solving skills
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Must be able to sit, stand, hear, and see on a constant basis.
Must be able to walk, write, and type on a frequent basis.
Must be able to lift and carry up to _50_ pounds.
Must be able to climb and descend stairs.
Must be able to bend, carry, reach, push, and pull on an occasional basis.
Must be able to communicate verbally and in writing. May work indoors and outdoors as needed. Exposure to heat up to 120 degrees and cold to 0 degrees.
May work in areas where noise level is such that hearing protection is required.
May work in areas where toxic, flammable, and hazardous materials are present.
May be exposed to varying amounts of dust and dirt.
Work surfaces may include concrete.
Employee must be able to tolerate non-toxic paint odors and be able to wear a respirator as required.
Employee must be able to operate a computer and communicate via telephone.
Some travel to other locations, meetings and/or seminars is required.
TECHNICAL/SKILL REQUIREMENTS:
Required:
- Must be able to pass color blindness test
- Must be able to use a laptop (or tablet) and competent in common applications such as Office Programs (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), Outlook, etc.
- Must have valid drivers license and ability to drive company vehicle as part of duties
