JOB DESCRIPTION
DIRECTOR OF CURRICULUM AND INSTRUCTION
Reports to: Superintendent
Job Objectives:
Oversees the continuous improvement of the instructional program to advance the district’s written, implemented, and assessed curricula and mandated proficiencies. Evaluates the ability of the instructional program to meet the learning needs of all students. Plans and implements effective staff development strategies. Actively encourages parental involvement.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Valid State of Ohio administrative certificate/license appropriate for the assignment.
- Superintendent or Assistant Superintendent license is preferred.
- Master’s degree or higher from an accredited college or university with a specific preparation in educational administration, curriculum, and instruction.
- Meets all mandated health requirements (e.g., a negative tuberculosis test, etc.).
- Provides documented evidence of a clear criminal record.
Responsibilities and Essential Functions:

- Directly facilitates the development, implementation, and evaluation of curriculum for all K-12 course offerings. Oversees the addition of courses, the grade placement of courses, and graduation requirements. Helps staff with the development of an educational philosophy for the instructional program.
- Oversees the provision of relevant certificated staff development and inservice programs. Coordinates staff development activities with the Shelby County Educational Service Center.
- Develops a strategy to implement identified curriculum and staff development priorities within specified time lines. Assumes responsibility for the effective communication of plans and objectives to staff.
- Participates as an active member of the district’s management team. Serves on assigned committees. Chairs the district-wide curriculum committee.
- Oversees the preparation and maintenance of complete and accurate records and inventories, required by law, district policy, and/or administrative directive. Ensures that all reports are submitted on time. Protects the confidentiality of privileged information.
- Assists the superintendent and treasures with financial projections. Prepares appropriations and budget recommendations. Evaluates and implements cost saving measures to ensure the judicious use of district funds.
- Researches and prepares applications for curricula and staff development funding opportunities (e.g., state and Federal programs, foundation grants, etc.).
- Provides leadership to advance and carry out the district’s continuous improvement plan. Analyzes and recommends organizational improvements.
- Monitors education trends and program innovations. Helps determine the relevance of new technology as it relates to curriculum, staff development, and classroom instruction. Regularly advises the superintendent about emerging issues.
- Assists with the development of the district’s school calendar.
- Oversees kindergarten registration.
- Oversees the open enrollment process.
- Promotes the continuity of the instructional program.
- Oversees the evaluation and selection of new books, equipment, and other instructional supplies.
- Develops and maintains a reference/resource library of curricula and staff development materials.
- Serves as an educational resource for administrators and staff. Attends staff, grade level, and departmental meetings as requested. Provides insight about the progression of student skills and the key contributions made by staff at each level.
- Assists with the entry year program.
- Supervises the gifted/talented and technology coordinators.
- Assists with proficiency and competency-based testing. Analyzes test results. Recommends instructional revisions, interventions, and other modifications to enhance student learning and improve test performance.
- Consults with staff to identify classroom modifications, instructional strategies, and/or adaptive equipment that support the attainment of educational goals.
- Pursues opportunities that promote close working relationships between parents, teachers, and students. Communicates high expectations for students. Shows an active interest in their progress.
- Supports high standards for student conduct. Protects the due process rights of students. Helps teachers with discipline concerns. Makes recommendation to the superintendent regarding student conduct and discipline issues as necessary.
- Maintains effective working relationships with community organizations (e.g., court systems, law enforcement, child welfare services, health facilities, etc.).
- Assists with the recruitment and interviewing of new staff when requested. Recommends staff assignments to the superintendent when requested. Provides ongoing guidance as needed.
- Helps monitor the performance of substitute teachers.
- Assists with staff performance evaluations when requested. Works with administrators to improve individual staff competencies.
- Participates in and/or supports appropriate research projects. Encourages the development, publication, and distribution of original instructional materials.
- Maintains visibility and participate in community activities.
- Strives to develop rapport with students, staff , parents, and the public. Responds to requests and complaints promptly and tactfully. Offers and accepts constructive suggestions diplomatically. Respects the personal confidences and privacy needs of individuals.
- Reports evidence of suspected child abuse as required by law.
- Seeks and uses community resources that enhance educational activities (e.g., parent volunteers, service groups, organizations, businesses, etc.).
- Encourages parent organizations and supports student activities as time permits.
- Participates in national, state, and regional activities that advance education (e.g., professional associations, advisory committees, etc.).
- Serves on the local professional development committee as directed by the superintendent.
- Pursues personal goals to improve future performance. Reviews literature and participates in a variety of activities to keep current with advances in education and organizational administration. Maintains licensure requirements.
- Serves as a role model for staff and students. Exemplifies responsible leadership. Demonstrates personal integrity, impartiality, respect, and courtesy.

Supervisory Responsibility:
Under the direction of the superintendent: administers the supervision andevaluation of assigned staff as authorized by board policy, administrative regulations, and contractual agreements.
Working Conditions:
Exposure to the following conditions may range from remote to frequent based on circumstances and factors that may not be predictable.
