What are the responsibilities and job description for the Painter/Laborer position at Sign Fab Inc?
A leading wholesale sign manufacturer is looking for a Spray Painter to join our team. Painters are responsible for taking signs from bare metal to a finished product using a variety of tools and equipment. Painters will prep and spray (we use Polyurethane paint similar to automotive painting) a variety of metals in various shapes and sizes. No job is the same so flexibility and ability to adjust to change is important.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Painter is to work as a team in helping Assembly Supervisor complete jobs on time.
- Painter is to comply with instructions given by Assembly Supervisor.
- Painters are responsible for communicating with assembly supervisor and paint according to assembly needs.
- Painters are responsible for receiving job order with letters that come from finishing room. Look over job orders ahead of time to paint, so that you may prepare paint mixes. Painters must review all job orders for proper letter colors, raceway colors, and possible trim colors before job is painted. If a paint color is missing or unknown in work order, notify supervisor immediately. Look for special instructions in work order. Painter must check and count all letters to make sure all letters are received from finish room.
- Painters are responsible for inspecting letters for flaws that need repair and return to finishing room if needed.
- Painters are responsible for ensuring that paint is mixed in SMALL quantities; when formulating a paint color so that paint is not wasted. Follow established rules/guides when cleaning paint guns and pods.
- Painters are responsible for ensuring that all PPE is used and in proper repair. If PPE is damaged or in need of repair notify supervisor immediately for replacements.
- Painters are responsible for keeping paint booth doors closed when applying primer or paint to allow for proper exhaust of fumes.
- We use an acrylic polyurethane paint
- Painters are to primer letters/cans before applying paint. Inside letters/cans are painted first if work order calls for painting inside letters/cans.
- Painters are responsible for ensuring to allow only necessary time for primer or paint to dry before touching or moving cans. Once cans have dried, move them outside of paint room to designated area. Keeping jobs together. Place work order with letters/cans.
- Painters are responsible for retrieving raceways from raceway rack outside paint room.
- Painters are responsible for ensuring raceways are to be painted in conjunction with letters/cans for that job. Do not paint letters for one job and a raceway for another. If a color is unknown tell assembly supervisor immediately.
- Painters are responsible for sanding raceways prior to primer and paint. Apply tape to job name on raceway before priming so that it can be identified by assembly.
- Once raceways are painted and dried, Painters are responsible for placing raceway on designated raceway rack outside of paint room.
- Once a job is completed, pour touch-up paint for letters and raceways into designated containers, and label them by job number and name. Place touch-up containers in designated box for retrieval by loaders.
- Painters are responsible for ensuring that all safety policies and procedures are followed at all times. Painters are responsible for the following Clean up procedures:
- Paint room will be kept clean and orderly at all times of the day.
- Paint waste will be emptied into designated waste barrels located in storage building.
- Do not keep paint waste in paint booth.
- Do not overfill waste barrels, notify supervisor when barrels are full so they can be labeled and picked up.
- Paint cannot be stored in paint room. Keep paint in storage areas until it is used.
- Turn compressor off and drain tank daily. Turn fans and lights off in spray room. Close fan door. Close and lock storage door.
- Do not smoke in or around paint booths!!! Do not allow fellow employees to smoke in or around paint booths!!!
- Paint guns and pods will be cleaned and emptied during the day when needed and at the end of the day.
- Do not leave paint in pods overnight. Clean guns according to established policy.
- Do not try to repair paint guns, compressors, or valves, notify assembly supervisor immediately when there is a problem with any of your equipment.
- Paint room floor is to be swept weekly using floor sweep. Room is to be sprayed down with water and hosed weekly or more often if needed.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS
- High school diploma/GED
- Must be able to lift up to 75 lbs.
- Must be able to pass a medical evaluation.
JOB KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
- Must be able to read, and interpret drawings and specifications.
- This position requires that the person be a highly organized, self-motivated individual who can work as part of a team and individually.
- Must have excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Must be able to manage multiple tasks and priorities and easily adapt to changing situations.
- Must be able to lift up to 75 lbs

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- High level of physical exertion required.

- Safety glasses may be required while performing specific tasks.
- Respirators must be worn while applying paint and primer.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
- Works in a manufacturing environment.
- Exposed to a high level of dust, odors, and fumes.
ADDITIONAL NOTES
- Will be required to perform other duties as requested, directed, or assigned by Production Manager, and/or Senior Management.
