Job Summary:
The Product Engineer role is responsible for load design of dunnage and related securement items that protect products during shipment. This involves product design with respect to capabilities of multiple Signode manufacturing facilities across North America. The role will support multiple product families across a variety of processes and market applications. Focus will be on industrial product/application design, product performance to specification, new product development from a production perspective, and industry certification and acceptance. This position will support growth and profit objectives through the successful completion of key projects that deliver improved productivity and a positive impact on operating costs.
Essential Functions:
• Support Operations Leadership on both general business and plant specific projects. Including but not limited to product production design, process engineering, efficiency, safety, and equipment specification.
• Application and quality troubleshooting – Identify product processing and usage issues and develop corrective actions to assure resolution; internally and externally. Work with all stakeholders to assure solutions are successfully implemented.
• Manage product design support to assure manufactured and resale products continually adhere to market and application specification requirements.
• Participate in, and sometimes lead projects and cross-functional teams supporting company initiatives.
• Network and partner effectively with local plant teams and other internal personnel/resources to promote an organizational culture that supports the achievement of business objectives.
• Provide periodic customer field engineering support to assist with product design, runnability, testing, and specifications. As example: assist customers in designing load securement layouts for their products shipped within railcars, containers and OTR trailers to minimize/negate damage. Securement systems often use multiple Signode products working in concert.
• Assist customers in complying with shipping requirements as set forth by governing transit bodies.
• Product, application and usage troubleshooting. The design of systems to aid customers in protecting products during shipment and lowering damage costs.
• Oversee and operate CAD design support for customer load securement needs.
• Support New Product Development from a plant production, operational capability and needs perspective. Participating in development teams for new products and product variations from conceptualization through and after commercialization.
• Acting as a product champion working with sales during the introduction process.
• Consult with other Signode departments on appropriate projects.
• Support plant, product and application training.
• Assist with capital requisition and development for relevant businesses.
• Assist with product cost analysis.
• Self-motivator with ability to work independently.
Qualifications
Education:
• Bachelor’s degree in a field related to Industrial Packaging, Industrial Engineering and/or Manufacturing Engineering.
Required Experience:
• 1-3 years of related experience.
• Product experience in a plant manufacturing environment.
• Microsoft Office applications.
• CAD design.
Preferred:
• Exposure to packaging engineering of paper-based products in a working environment
