Yard Supervisor
Sims Metal Management is the world’s leading metal recycling company; turning unwanted post-consumer items and industrial scrap into raw materials for manufacturing operations around the world.
Summary:
This position is responsible for supervising the processing of scrap as efficiently as possible while promoting an accident-free and environmentally compliant workplace. The Yard Supervisor is also responsible for general supervision of the yard personnel and day-to-day operations including maintenance on equipment, monthly inspections, and safety.
The ideal candidate will have working knowledge of tools and equipment used in a scrap yard including but not limited to: torches, cranes, loaders, forklifts, bobcats, shears, balers, and other production-related equipment.
Essential Job Functions:
- Works with department staff, organizational wide staff, vendor/suppliers, and clients/customers.
- Supervises the yard operations, supervise employees, contribute to personnel decisions including hiring, discipline including and up to discharge, merit raises, and annual performance evaluations.
- Trains and directs department employees in proper use of equipment.
- Order and purchases parts and equipment.
- Provides training in the areas of safety equipment operations and material identification.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Schedules the preventive maintenance on equipment
- Maintains all maintenance records.
- Perform weekly and monthly inspections of all equipment and machinery.
- Responsible for troubleshooting hydraulic problems and directing personnel in repairing equipment.
- Responsible for enforcement of safety regulations.
Requirements:
- Must have 3 – 5 years applicable industry experience or related industry.
- Undergraduate degree; or equivalent work experience.
- Must be willing to work in shop area and an out-of-doors environment in all types of weather.
- Must have effective written and verbal communication skills.
- Fluency in Spanish a plus.
- Strong analytical and mathematical skills.
- Must have excellent problem solving skills with the ability to find suitable solutions for productivity, environmental, safety-related, and employment issues.
- Minimum of 2 years experience in mechanical, hydraulic and electrical repairs on heavy equipment and machinery desired.
- Minimum of 2 years supervisory experience.
- CDL Class ‘A’ a plus.
- Must have some knowledge of computers
