Description

Provides operational support and daily supervision of the undergraduate teaching program in the Department of Surgery. Participates in the medical student curriculum development and review. Creates and maintains all undergraduate evaluation systems. Develops, implements, and supports the educational research for the department of surgery. Responsible for development and administration of the Mock Page Program.

Examples of Duties

Administration 40%
A. Develops and directs the daily implementation of the operational policies and procedures pertaining to the undergraduate teaching program in the Department of Surgery.
B. Maintains close contact with the Clerkship Director of the Department of Surgery regarding the operational policies and procedures of the undergraduate teaching program and specific educational needs that may develop.
C. Develops and schedules the educational activities for each clerkship.
D. Works closely with department faculty members in enhancing the educational experiences of the students in the surgical clerkship.
E. Develops and implements Standardized Patient cases for use in the training and evaluation of residents.
F. Designs, administers, and evaluates the medical student curriculum.
G. Assists skills lab staff in administration of technical skills labs for medical students
H. Acts as liaison between the undergraduate surgical teaching service and the patient care services of the hospitals. Works out solutions when individual problems arise involving medical students and hospital personnel.
I. Assists in the development of and administration of national curriculum for 4th year Resident Readiness Elective, which prepares students going into a surgery speciality for their PGY1 year.
J. Collaborates with webmaster to design and maintain surgery clerkship information for department of surgery website.
K. Assists in the development and administration of the Residents as Teachers course for surgical residents.

II. Teaching 15%
A. Designs, develops and presents orientation to the Surgery Clerkship for all 3rd year medical students.
B. Participates in the student evaluation process during the surgery clerkship.
C. Participates actively in the Department of Surgery education committees.
D. Presents orientation to the surgery clerkship for all new residents and faculty.
E. Provides orientation to all new faculty regarding the undergraduate program.
E. Provides suggestions to faculty regarding how to improve the effectiveness of their coaching of medical students.

III. Research 15%
A. Participates actively in the educational research projects within the Department of Surgery under the direction of the Director of Surgical Education and the Professor of Surgical Education Development and Research.
B. Designs,implements, presents and publishes independent research projects pertaining to individual clinical and educational interests.
C. Mentors medical students in designing, implementing and publishing surgical education research.

IV. Service/Centralized Paging Program 30%
A. Represents the Department of Surgery in relevant hospital and university matters.
B. Represents the Department of Surgery at national and statewide meetings.
C. A team of surgeons, nurses, residents and medical education experts developed cases (mock pages) representative of calls surgical PGY1s might respond to on any given day. Students receive these pages unannounced throughout the day and during "on call" nights during a four week elective surgical resident preparation course that is offered during their fourth year of medical school. Associated duties include:
1. Assists in the development of Mock Page curriculum for use in the
ACS/APDS/ASE National Resident Preparedness Course.
2. Maintains the series of Mock Page scenarios annually, using multi-institutional faculty peer review. This includes assuring that all cases contain accurate, current evidence based medical information.
3. Administers Mock Pages to medical students through out the United States which requires paging students in the evening, at night and on weekends.
4. Evaluates and provides verbal and written feedback to medical students on their performance with each clinical scenario.
5. Assists in development of the mock page curriculum for use in evaluating PGY1 residents competency.
6. Maintains a series of Mock Page scenarios and updating for current practice for PGY1 residents.
7. Makes initial contact with outside institutions for the SIU Centralized Mock Page Program, providing an introduction to the program and informing about costs involved with the program.
8. Develops and updates job description for Registered Nurse's hired for the mock page program.
9. Develops and administers training materials to Registered Nurse extra help hired by SIU for the mock page program.
10. Trains staff at outside institutions to adminster Mock Pages to
their own medical students.
11. Develops and manages program budget.
12. Develops and maintains service agreement for use by participating institutions.
13. Collaborates with department of surgery webmaster to design and update Mock Page program website.

Qualifications

1) Master's degree in education and/or nursing; AND

2) Licensed as a Registered Nurse in the State of Illinois; AND

3) At least five (5) years of nursing experience, three (3) of which were in a hospital setting; AND

4) Sensitive to the needs of underrepresented minority populations
