Job Overview
Skyline Smart Energy is expanding and scaling, and our design department has recently gone through some changes. We are looking for an experienced and innovative Residential Solar Design Manager to make sure that the Design part of our pipeline is running smoothly and quickly, and to mold the team in an effective way. This will be a slightly different approach to a Design team based on the resources we have, so flexibility and new approaches will be in the mix. The ideal candidate is someone who has a wide variety and quantity of designs under their belt, has experience in reviewing work of other designers, is an excellent communicator and explainer, and can pivot with the changes in the industry and the company without a lot of friction. The security side of our business is already one of the forerunners of the industry.

Responsibilities and Duties
● This position will report to the Director of Pipeline Operations
● Review plansets for residential solar projects for accuracy and quality and give feedback to the teams creating them
● Call out the best route for design and engineering while taking into account maximizing solar production, customer preference, installation efficiency, and AHJ/Utility/HOA requirements
● Coordinate the design queues and prioritize jobs while taking into account weekly quantity, time in queue, urgency, and effects on the rest of the pipeline, while maintaining team quality in documentation and CRM interaction
● Develop subcontractor partners or Tier 1/Tier 2 reviewers to be able to produce a high volume of high quality plansets with a high permitting and inspection pass rate
● Collaborate with the Permitting, Utility, and Installation teams to help with project changes, decisions, and communications about the best path forward for new jobs and corrections to existing jobs.
● Assist the communications teams by helping explain to customers and sales reps in layman’s terms the options or limitations for their solar projects in the event of necessary changes
● Understand and provide occasional production reports using provided and standard software
● Help document AHJ and Utility requirements and help research planset requirements in new locations
● Create, modify, redesign, and work occasional high priority accounts that need quick turnaround times.
Interviewees will be asked several detailed questions about their past experience and approach to problem solving, and solutions to tough engineering situations. Interviewees will be asked to read through
2-3 sample planset pages and one full planset document and call out QA feedback or lack thereof on each.
Qualifications
● Required:
- Minimum 2 years of full solar planset creation, as a designer or lead
- AutoCAD experience - working in a template and creating/modifying templates
- Proficiency with Adobe Acrobat and other editing software
- Advanced Proficiency with Basic Design Skills
■ Panel placement for best production
■ Load breaker, line side, derate, MPU determination
■ Battery projects (Enphase mandatory)
■ String Inverter and Microinverter diagrams
■ Mounting and railing depictions
■ Load Calculations
■ Wire Sizing
■ Fire setbacks and clearance rules
■ Required equipment sizing and placement
- Proven capability in working with a multifaceted CRM and documentation
- 1-2 years in an environment requiring responsibility for attention to detail
- Experience in leading or reviewing plansets created by other designers
- Recent design or design review experience on residences in California and Texas
● Preferred:
- PV Designer NABCEP Certification
- Experience with FranklinWH battery design
- Experience in training and development
- Queue management
- Working on designs for Sunnova financed projects
- Advanced Design knowledge beyond basics:
■ Multi-battery installations
■ Generators
■ Ground Mounts
■ More complex interconnection methods/options
■ RMA/GMA
- Experience in solar operations in more than just design
- Leadership experience of any kind, within or outside of solar
Work Details
● All staff work a flexible hybrid schedule - most days can be worked remote, but regular visits to our office locations are asked of all team members.
● Laptop, software, and tools will be provided
● Remote or partially remote employees are expected to purchase and maintain their own internet connection from home with whatever plan suffices to be able to properly complete work during working hours without interruptions or delays
● The position is salaried, pay is biweekly
