Position overview

The SLAC Technology Transfer Manager is a senior member of the Technology Transfer and Strategic Partnerships (TT&SP) Office in the organization of the Deputy Director for Science and Technology of SLAC. The SLAC Technology Transfer Manager reports to the director of TT&SP and leads the tech transfer function of the TT&SP organization. Develops and executes SLAC’s technology transfer initiatives with guidance from the TT&SP director and senior technical leaders and in partnership with Stanford University’s Office of Technology Licensing. Designs and executes a SLAC tech transfer program informed by best-in-class practices across the national lab complex, academia and the private sector. As a tech transfer advisor, supports SLAC researchers in understanding the translation potential of scientific discoveries into future technologies and critical applications; helps define the value proposition and pursues path to commercialization of SLAC’s core technologies. Promotes innovation transfer into and out of SLAC through appropriate engagement activities connecting SLAC researchers with the Bay Area and broader entrepreneurial ecosystem.

The SLAC Technology Transfer Manager is expected to combine business intelligence with knowledge of applicable U.S. Department of Energy requirements and other laws and regulations to advance potential opportunities in technology transfer. Has an advanced technical background that enables a high-level understanding of the science and technology fields forming the basis of SLAC’s mission and initiatives. Has a demonstrated understanding of intellectual property law.

Your responsibilities include:

  • Develop and execute vision for SLAC’s tech transfer program and activities; evaluate programs or functions, policies, and procedures related to the technology transfer mission; identify issues, develop and implement solutions which may include changes to programs, policies and procedures across the lab and university.
  • Identify SLAC basic research activity portfolios with the potential of translation into technologies across the lab-to-market adoption continuum; develop strategy and plan to commercialization of SLAC’s technologies and lead relevant activities including leading proposals and execution of lab-to-market programs.
  • Recommend the adoption of emerging technologies and the development of new methods and approaches.
  • Identify, clarify, and resolve issues with strategic impact and substantial significance, which span multiple areas, using advanced technical and professional knowledge requiring broad discretion and judgment; support the resolution of intellectual property issues within strategic partnerships and commercialization activities.
  • Develop staff within TT&SP and across the SLAC mission areas, which includes recruiting, developing, evaluating and setting priorities; manage business, technical, and educational activities.
  • Collaborate with others on the direction of activities relevant to long-term strategic objectives.
  • Serve as a liaison to senior management, cross-functional areas, schools and external organizations such as sponsors and government agencies.
  • Participate in and/or lead tech transfer committees within the DOE Technology Transfer Working Group or other technology transfer communities.
  • Implement, evaluate and maintain quality control standards to ensure program success.
  • Negotiate with internal departments and external agencies with authority to commit resources and effort.

To be successful in this position you will bring:

  • Advanced technical degree and a minimum of eight years of relevant experience or combination of education and relevant experience.
  • Experience leading complex scientific, engineering or technical research projects or programs.
  • Detailed understanding of relevant business and technical knowledge and problem resolution.
  • Ability to synthesize and articulate technical and scientific methodologies, specifications, and information.
  • Knowledge of emerging technologies, trends, methodologies, and resource management principles.
  • Demonstrated ability to work and communicate effectively with others.
  • Exceptional customer relationship and consensus building skills.
  • Ability to influence and establish effective working relationships in a diverse environment.
  • Ability to resolve complex issues quickly and make decisions that meet university objectives in a collaborative culture.

In addition, preferred requirements include:

  • PhD in science or engineering combined with business degree and at least eight years of relevant experience.
  • Entrepreneurial experience in deep tech within Si valley or other technology hubs.
  • Prior experience working with scientists and engineers to identify the value proposition of early-stage concepts and leading them successfully towards market adoption.
  • Demonstrated program management skills.
  • Demonstrated understanding of intellectual property law.

The expected pay range for this position is $172,000 - $210,000 per annum. SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory/Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for a position. The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location and external market pay for comparable jobs.
