Job Description
In this position, you will be responsible for the installation, upgrade, and removal of data center cabling, Computer Rooms cabling to improve the existing Cable Plant to ensure that it is a reliable, modular and flexible to support current and future customer needs
Required Skills and Education:
- Cable installer with 2-3 years’ experience in cable pulling and installation, datacenter cabling installation, termination, testing, and troubleshooting.
Certification includes:
- Master Low voltage Installer Certification
- BICSI Installer 1® (INST1)
- BICSI Technician® (TECHTM)
- Fiber Optics Installer (FOI) Certification.
- Cable installer with one to two years of related experience in telecommunications or fiber optic cabling.
An understanding of the following:
- Main Communications Rooms (MCRs)
- Cable Plant System
- Routing
- Pathways
- Installation of the following cable types unless otherwise specified:
- Unshielded twisted pair
- Single-mode Fiber Optic
- Multi-mode Fiber Optic
- Unshielded Twisted Pair (UTP) Cable
- UTP Patch Cables
- Single-mode Fiber Optic
- Multi-mode Fiber Optic
- Unshielded Twisted Pair (UTP) Cable
- UTP Patch Cables
- Draft Cable Labels
- Label the cables with their destination at every termination point (to ensure that both the ends of the cable are labeled for identification and traceability).
- Place labels where they can be read without disconnecting a cable. Labels should be permanent; machine-printed labels.
- Avoid routing the cables over equipment and other patch panel ports. Instead, route the cables through the sides of the rack hidden from sight.
- Avoid placing multiple cable bundles over each other or over bundling the cables, as it leads to performance degradation of the cables below.
- Always use the shortest cord possible for the connection.
- Avoid leaving cable slack under the floor and bundle the cables using Velcro ties.
- Avoid leaving loose (unplugged) cables on the floor, as this could constitute as a major safety hazard.
- Ensure that the cables are not installed in front of the air ventilation grids as it leads to improper ventilation, overheating of the equipment, and dust accumulation.
- Avoid mounting the cabling components in places that block accessibility to other equipment (such as a power strip or fans) in and out of the racks.
- Separate the copper and fiber cables in the runs (or have separate runs) because the weight of the copper cables can crush the fiber cables that are placed below it.
- Use the Velcro-based ties every 1 to 2 meters for bundling or securing the cables, and avoid using the zip ties as they apply pressure on the cables.
- Remove the abandoned cables, as they restrict the airflow, and contribute to the possible increase in the operational temperatures, which can affect the durability of the system.
- Cable slack must never be left hanging loose in the channel. This can cause "bunching" of the cords at the bottom (spaghetti).
- Apply sufficient vertical and horizontal managers to data center cable management, which can provide convenience for future changes as cables are removed for upgrade or unforeseen downtime events.

- Provide sourcing support on the purchasing and installation with the following guidelines unless otherwise specified:
- The power cables will be manufactured in accordance with the National Electrical Code (NEC).
- Materials used in the manufacture of power cables will be Underwriters Laboratories (UL) listed or approved.
- Wire will be the stranded variety.
- Wire will be appropriately sized for the designated breaker and receptacle being ordered.
- Wire for exceptionally long whips shall be sized in accordance with voltage drop calculations.
- The wiring will be color coded in accordance with the NEC, as follows: Phase A = Black, Phase B = Red, Phase C = Blue, Neutral = White, & Ground = Green.
- Sheathing for all cables will be Flexible type CB, UL listed or approved, Shielded Blue Liquid Tight conduit appropriately sized according to the NEC for the conductors.
- A seven foot length of wire will extend beyond the end of the liquid tight to allow installation into PDU and PDUX panels.
- All cables are to be Megger Tested prior to delivery.
- All cables are to be labeled according to the following requirements:
- A separate label will be used for the Cable # and for the remaining information.
- Both labels will be affixed 12 inches from both ends.
- Labels will be secured by heat shrink tubing.
- Text for the designated Cable # will be one inch high.
- The remaining information will appear on a separate label to include the PDU breaker designation, the POUS number if applicable, the receptacle designation, and the cable length.
- All circuit breakers are to be Square "D" Bolt On (QOB) Type or General Electric (GE) Type.
- Cable Plant Management System
- Experience with cable plat management system will be a plus
- Standards
- Experience with the use the best commercial practices for the tasking for installing all phases of this installation in accordance with all applicable standards from Electronics Industry Association (EIA)/Telecommunications Industry Association (TIA) 568B, 569, 606, TSB Technical Service Bulletin (TSB) 67 (Testing UTP), TSB 72 (Fiber cabling guidelines), and TSB 75 (Horizontal Cabling in open offices); National Electric Codes; and Fire Codes.
- Datacenter installation will include office after 5:pm - 10:00 pm. Contractors are expected to arrive for work at 5:30 pm to conduct the walkthrough with the Computer Services Division (CSvD) based on schedule
- All other installation will be based on within regular work hours 8 am to 5 pm
- With a 35-40 hours work week per week.
- The normal daily schedule shall be Monday through Friday from 8:00 am-5:00 pm.
