The Mechanical Engineering group at SMRT comprises HVAC, plumbing, fire protection, process, and commissioning. We work alongside SMRT's architectural, structural, electrical, site, and interiors groups from project inception through design and construction to advance our client’s vision. Our designers, engineers, commissioning agents, and project managers are also involved in project pursuits and business development.
SMRT’s Mechanical Engineering group has an immediate opening for a full-time Plumbing/Fire Protection Engineer. Depending on experience and location, the opportunity exists to work independently or remote from our Portland, ME, Bangor, Maine, Andover, Massachusetts, or Schenectady, New York office locations.
Representative Duties and Responsibilities:
- Function as Engineer of Record for plumbing, process, and/or fire protection scope.
- Develop schematic level information and document project work in accordance with codes, SMRT, and industry standards.
- Supervise quality and efficient production of contract documents.
- Perform modeling and calculations.
- Research specifications and materials.
- Review and respond to contractor submittals and RFIs.
- Visit project sites for existing conditions assessments, construction progress observation, and project closeout.
- Coordinate and communicate project workloads with discipline leaders and other members of the mechanical group.
- Coordinate work with other in-house disciplines as applicable.
- Work under supervision of discipline leaders.
- May function as a Project Manager depending on experience.

Requirements
Minimum Requirements:
- 5 years of design of plumbing, process piping and/or fire protection systems.
- Knowledge of national, state, and local codes as they pertain to plumbing and/or fire protection.
- Ability to relate to building construction, their components in three dimensions, and interact with other disciplines to coordinate all document efforts.
- Understand materials, systems, and commercial building construction.
- Strong interpersonal and written communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Demonstrated ability to meet multiple deadlines on multiple projects
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office.
Preferred Requirements:
· PE license.
· Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field.
