Export Compliance Advisor/Lead reports to the ECO, International Trade Compliance and will assist in the development, maintenance, and implementation of trade compliance policies and procedures across the corporation.
The Lead will be working with the Export Compliance team of subject matter experts to execute the strategic direction and global management of all aspects of our company's trade compliance programs, including periodic self-testing, import compliance and export/sanctions compliance.
This position will be based in Herndon, Virginia or Remote will be considered. Our vision is to drive overall trade compliance for SMX.
Responsibilities:
- Develop, deploy, and improve global trade compliance program and procedures that meet evolving regulations and requirements
- Direct remediation efforts across the company through in-depth gap assessment and process improvement/implementation to mitigate risk to the company and ensure compliance with global laws and regulations
- Act as company coordinator for execution of Customs audit matters, remediation actions and disclosures with close partnership with the ECO
- Develop a communication strategy for compliance program to increase visibility of the function within the Company and enhance Company employees' understanding/awareness of Export and Import issues, including developing function-based, risk-based trade compliance training and communication
- Provide strategic consultation to business units, procurement, project managers, order management, etc.
- Resolve matters pertaining to export/import transactions, Supply Chain Optimization, and International Trade Sanctions to ensure compliance with all applicable U.S. laws and regulations, as well as local country laws
- Oversee and provide guidance to the trade compliance team (including as necessary trade operations stakeholders at global subsidiaries) in their day-to-day compliance matters which are not limited to, but include customer and transaction screening escalations, end-use/user restrictions, sanctions, export license determination and drafting license applications, partner/other government agency requirements, and escalation matters
- Protects Smartronix reputation and employees by facilitating legal and responsible trading, Minimizes exposure to fines and penalties
- Promotes customer satisfactions by avoiding shipment delays and ultimately saves money by avoiding delays, investigations, and penalties.
- Other responsibilities and duties as assigned.
- Consults with the ECO and legal counsel as needed to resolve difficult legal compliance issues.
Required Skills and Experience:
- Clearance Required: DoD Top Secret
- Bachelor's Degree and a minimum of 3 years' import/export experience or related field OR
- At least 1 year managing people/team
- In-depth knowledge of US, China, and EU import/export compliance regulations
Desired Skills and Experience:
- Related hands-on experience with trade compliance and Customs and export control knowledge
- Solid project management experience, with a demonstrated ability to prioritize tasks and manage multiple projects with varying deadlines effectively and on time.
- Familiarity and/or experience with lean manufacturing, kaizen, and Six Sigma or similar type of continuous improvement principles
- Comprehensive knowledge of HTS/ECCN classification, Country of origin determination and Custom valuation principles
- Strong influencing and negotiating skills and ability to act as internal advisor to make informed and timely decisions are essential requirements for this position
