Position Summary :

Under the supervision of Police Sergeant, patrol designated areas of the Reservation to protect life and property, to prevent and deter crime, enforce laws, respond to citizen requests for assistance and perform investigations.

The Reservation includes lands in Isabella County and Arenac County. The position may require permanent assignment to either location.

All Tribal Police staff must adhere to mandated reporting laws.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities :

  • Perform law enforcement patrol activities.
  • Operate a motor vehicle and observe and monitor the public to determine compliance or noncompliance with prescribed operating or safety standards and laws.
  • Pursue and stops offenders, subdue resisting offenders using necessary force where appropriate, including deadly force.
  • Issue citations and make arrests.
  • Search persons, places and things; seize and impound property and evidence; transport arrested persons and property.
  • Mediate disputes.
  • Perform crowd and riot control activities.
  • Conduct law enforcement investigations.
  • Protect crime and traffic accident scenes.
  • Conduct face-to-face and phone interviews; observe, gather, record, process and preserve evidence. Measure and diagrams crime and traffic accident scenes.

Prepare detailed written reports of investigative findings. Seize and process evidence.

  • Present testimony and evidence in court. Prepare a professionally written document.
  • Perform public assistance activities.
  • Respond to citizen requests for assistance to fires, accidents and crime scenes.
  • Administer first aid to sick and injured citizens for a wide variety of illnesses and injuries.
  • Assist distressed motorists and crime scene individuals.
  • Direct traffic.
  • Move persons, vehicles and other property.
  • Utilize two-way radio to hear and respond to radio communications, voice instructions and / or commands under a variety of working situations and background noise levels consistent with scene processing and / or traffic control.
  • Operate a MCT and a variety of standard office equipment including a computer terminal, telephone, calculator, copy and fax machine requiring continuous and repetitive arm, hand and eye movement.
  • Provide excellent community service with courtesy, integrity and professionalism.
  • Provide excellent customer service for all internal and external customers of the operations at all times. Provide solutions for customer concerns and continually focus on customer service as our top priority.
  • Must maintain strict confidentiality and present a positive, professional demeanor and image at all times.

Contacts / Purpose of Contacts :

  • Contact is with other governmental agencies, local, state and federal. local police, county sheriff, state police and FBI as well as Attorney’s Office).
  • Contact with employees of the organization, Tribal Council members, Tribal members, and with the general public.

  • Knowledge of applicable federal, state, tribal laws, regulations and requirements.
  • Knowledge of Michigan Penal Code and Motor Vehicle Laws.
  • Knowledge of general social problems and cultural diversity of citizenry.
  • Knowledge of first aid principles and practices.
  • Knowledge of principles and practices of safe motor vehicle operation and maintenance.
  • Knowledge of interviewing and interrogation techniques.
  • Knowledge of crime scene management and preliminary investigation procedures.
  • Knowledge of principles and practices of radio dispatch and communication.
  • Skill in preparing clear, concise, accurate, and complete written reports.
  • Skill in maintaining composure under stressful or dangerous conditions.
  • Skill in the safe and effective operation and maintenance of law enforcement equipment.
  • Ability to exercise judgment and make decisions as to appropriate action under pressure in accordance with rules, regulations and policies.
  • Ability to work cooperatively, courteously, but firmly with all segments of the public.
  • Ability to observe and monitor people's behavior or objects to determine compliance with laws, codes and regulations; recall details accurately.
  • Ability to comprehend and make references from written material and learn job-related material through observation, structured lecture and oral instruction.

This learning takes place in an on-the-job training or classroom setting.

Physical Demands :

  • Frequent use of hands, wrists, fingers associated with computer equipment.
  • Walking, running, lifting and climbing during efforts to catch or subdue hostile individuals; good reflexes of the arms and hands in order to draw and shoot firearms quickly and accurately.
  • Situations will occur where prolonged sitting, driving, walking, or waiting is required.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and ability to adjust focus.
  • Frequent talking and hearing.
  • Ability to concentrate on and complete tasks in the presence of distractions.
  • Position requires frequent lifting of 75 lbs.
  • Position requires ability to lift, carry or pull heavy objects.
  • Strength is required to effectively subdue and / or remove persons in difficult or emergency situations.

Work Environment :

  • Normal office environment, automobile, or outdoors.
  • Work is performed outdoors with exposure to dirt, dust, pollen, inclement weather, temperature extremes, traffic hazards, body fluids, hazardous chemical, firearms, various evidence, firearms and unpleasant odors.
  • Work is performed on access paved, gravel, rough or turf areas; climb elevations and stairs.
  • Must possess sufficient stamina to work under all types of weather conditions including extreme hot / cold and to lift, carry, push, or pull a variety of tools, equipment and materials
  • Employee may be exposed to hazardous, uncontrollable and life threatening situations and infectious disease
  • Use and maintain proficiency with a variety of law enforcement tools, including handguns, batons and other weapons.
  • Evening, weekend, and / or holiday work will be required.
  • Extended hours and irregular shifts may be required.
  • Travel is required.
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Must be a US citizen and at least 21 years of age.
  • Must be able to pass departmental fitness evaluation.
  • Must not have criminal history that would prevent applicant from acquiring any certification or qualification required.
  • Must be able to pass drug screening.
  • Must be able to pass background check to meet the employment eligibility requirements as they pertain to the position.

Desired Qualifications :

Associate’s Degree.

License, Certification, or Special Requirements :

  • MCOLES certified or MCOLES certifiable.
  • CPR and First Aid Certifications.
  • Must have a valid State of Michigan Driver’s License with the proper designation required for the vehicle utilized to perform the job duties;

must be able to obtain and maintain a Tribal Driver’s License and qualify for coverage by SCIT auto liability insurance carrier.

  • Native American preference shall apply to all positions.
