The SSRC invites applications for the position of Program Manager to work closely with and support the program director of the African Peacebuilding Network and Next Generation Social Sciences in Africa programs to manage the programs’ ongoing activities and day-to-day operations. The African Peacebuilding Network (APN) and the Next Generation Social Sciences in Africa program (Next Gen) are funded by Carnegie Corporation of New York and support independent research by African scholars and practitioners in the fields of peacebuilding, security, development, and related areas through fellowships, grants, publications, and public engagement.

As a program manager, you will be responsible for a range of programmatic activities. This includes, but is not limited to, budget and project management, oversight and design of the application, review, and selection of APN and NextGen fellowship competitions, and implementation of workshops and other events.

Responsibilities

  • Manage the operations of the program, including multiple projects and virtual outreach events.
  • Work regularly with external contacts.
  • Assist the program director and other staff in the planning and implementation of seminars, workshops, and conferences.
  • Provide on- and offsite support for program events.
  • Manage fellowship database and provide administrative support for the application review process.
  • Other duties and additional responsibilities and projects as directed.

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in one of the social sciences, the humanities, or a closely related field.
  • 3 years of program management experience.
  • Academic interest in the study of Africa, with specific focus on development, peace, and security issues.
  • Exceptional written and oral communication skills, including solid presentation skills, with the ability to communicate effectively to a variety of audiences.
  • Excellent organizational and project management skills with strong attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated ability to take initiative, assume responsibility, and respond to changing demands.
  • Experience in maintaining expense accounts and budgeting.
  • Familiarity with and strong interest in programs designed to support and strengthen the work of researchers.
  • Ability to work collaboratively, as well as to independently manage multiple priorities and lead program staff when needed.
  • High level of proficiency with all MS Office applications.
  • Experience supervising and/or serving as a mentor to junior staff a plus.
  • Familiarity with preparation of grant proposals a plus
  • Willing and able to travel internationally, if required.

Salary and Benefits

Annual salary: $65,000–$72,000 commensurate with experience.
