SOME (So Others Might Eat) exists to help homeless and poor individuals and families in Washington, DC. Our more than 30 programs throughout the district provide comprehensive services that lead to mental and physical health, continued sobriety, job training, living-wage employment, and affordable housing. We meet immediate needs with food, clothing, and healthcare and offer the tools one needs to live with hope, dignity, and greater independence.
Position Description: The Education Coordinator will promote a focus on education within the Family Services department. The Education Coordinator will provide academic consultation and advocacy to individuals and families in all family housing programs and provides educational training and resources to the Family Services staff and residents. The Education Coordinator will also provide oversight and instruction of the SPFK (SOME Place for Kids) program and tutors.
Qualifications
Required: Bachelor's degree; 2-4 years teaching and/or case management experience; experience with special educational programs.
Preferred: master's degree in education, Special Education, Early Childhood Development, or related field; 4-6 years. case management experience; 4 years of experience with educational programs and the DC Public School system; preferably as a teacher or special education coordinator; previous supervisory experience. Valid Driver's license and access to a personal vehicle.
Required License/Certification: CPR/First-Aid, CPR for Infants, MSW and BSW graduates MUST be licensed to practice in Washington, DC by the Department of Health.
Schedule: Monday-Friday, 9:00am-5:30pm; two evenings per week 11:00am-7:30pm on an as-needed basis
Expected Contributions/Education:
- Link children and adults with resources and opportunities to improve education
- Educate parents about legal rights in schooling and connect them to legal and advocacy resources as needed
- Advise families on academic, disciplinary, and truancy issues
- Participate in case conferencing to identify the educational needs of children and families.
- Support, guide, and monitor the collection of school data such as report cards, school attendance data, IEPs, discipline reports, etc.
- Collaborate with Family Services staff to address the educational concerns of families
- Conduct school visits and participate in school meetings to support and empower parents, as needed.
Expected Contributions/Program Management:
- Train Case Managers and Program Assistants on academics and educational issues of families
- Lead the guidance, training, evaluation, and implementation of the SOME Place for Kids (SPFK) after-school programs
- Participate in the development and implementation of College Support programs for high school students and connect students and parents to appropriate college financial assistance and retention programs
- Participate in the development Coordinate, and implementation of support programming for youth transitioning from HS, including graduation support and progression to positive, empowered family and community roles
- Coordinate, implement, and facilitate summer camp and school uniform reimbursement programs
- Works with the Volunteer Coordinator to coordinate the training of volunteer tutors
- Provide outreach to public and charter schools, educational programs, and colleges.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Knowledge of navigating DC Public Schools, Charter schools, and Private school systems
- Knowledge and understanding of grades K-12 and special education
- Knowledge of teen empowerment programming and college preparation and retention programming
- Knowledge of laws and legal rights of students and parents and the effect on families (i.e. McKinney Vento, IDEA, etc.)
- Knowledge of adult education, GED acquisition, adult college and vocational resources, adult program operation, and referral to local resources
- Knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer and individualized services. This includes understanding residents' needs, meeting quality standards for services, and evaluating satisfaction
- Knowledge of 504 planning and IEP process as well as know-how to advocate for needed accommodations for children impacted
- Ability to communicate with diverse audiences
- Familiarity with the practice of restorative justice in schools
- Ability to establish and adhere to strong professional boundaries
- Ability to design programming around client needs with identified outcomes, as well as the means to measure outcomes
Reports to: Education & Engagement Director
Position Designation: This position is designated as Safety Sensitive. You may be subject to drug testing prior to or during your employment with SOME. In this position, you may be disqualified from employment based on the presence of marijuana in test results, even if you possess a medical card authorizing the use of medical marijuana.
Physical Demands: Must be able to lift up to 20 pounds. Requires looking at a computer screen for several hours a day. May be required to sit for long periods. Must be able to travel to events and meetings offsite.
