The Department


Information about the German Program in the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures:

Students may earn a German minor or may simply add one or two semesters of language study to boost graduate school and job applications. Being able to communicate in German and having a basic foundation in German history and culture significantly enhances the study of other fields, such as history, political science, global studies, music, art history, philosophy, psychology, sociology, and other disciplines.

Students taking German know that they enrich their academic and career opportunities. Learning German and gaining valuable insights into the history and culture of the German-speaking countries can offer a competitive edge in our increasingly global world. Recognizing the increasing interconnections in our global world, and Germany as one of the key players within the EU and in the international arena, the German Program, along with , helps prepare students for graduate school and careers in a field of their interest.The program provides students with a stimulating and supportive learning environment, as well as personal advising within a vibrant community of German language students.

Duties of the Position

Teach undergraduate German courses as needed at all levels (lower- and upper-division) of German language as well as General Education courses in English about literature, cinema, or the history and cultures of German-speaking countries. German language courses are generally focused on first-year courses. Must be able to work with diverse groups of faculty, staff, and students to create an inclusive environment. Must be able to create clear and accessible Canvas course pages. Successful candidates must offer weekly student hours for student support.


Professional Qualifications

Required:

*M.A. in German, German Studies, or Comparative Literature (or related field)

*Two years of university teaching in German

*Native or near-native fluency in spoken and written German

Preferred: * Ph. D. or ABD in German, German Studies, or Comparative Literature

Rank and Salary

Full-time is a 15-unit workload per semester. Actual salary is dependent upon the number of units assigned, educational preparation, and availability of funds subject to any CSU system faculty contract salary increases.

  • Salary commensurate with degree level and experience.
  • Anticipated Hiring Salary Range: $4,530 - $6,056 per full-time month.
  • The full-time (15 units per semester) monthly base salary range indicated above is prorated to the number of units worked and are paid in six monthly payments for each full semester.
  • Selection as a candidate in the applicant pool, does not guarantee employment. Temporary Faculty appointments are made on a part-time, temporary basis and contingent upon department needs and funding.
  • Temporary Faculty appointments are made on a semester-by-semester basis.
  • Relocation expenses will not be provided for temporary faculty appointments.
  • Expenses incurred to attend an interview for temporary faculty positions are not reimbursed by the University.

department:
- Temporary Faculty with three-year contracts do not need to reapply.
- Temporary Faculty who have taught for the department within the past
two years only need to submit an updated CV to remain in the pool.
