Visiting Faculty Position

This position is a full-time one (1) year appointment per the Collective Bargaining Agreement (Article 12.32). For re-appointment in future terms, the faculty member must submit an application to the Temporary Faculty Pool and/or apply to other faculty vacancies, as they are available.

The Department

Majors in the Department of Chemistry may pursue a B.S in chemistry, (certified by the American Chemical Society), a B.S. in biochemistry (also certified), or a B.A. in chemistry. A minor in chemistry is also offered. The Department's objectives include providing students with a broad, fundamental background in chemistry (in a liberal arts setting) and its applications to prepare them to work in industry or in research laboratories, pursue graduate study, or professional school. Many graduates go on to graduate schools, health professional schools or find employment in local industries. The Department also provides important courses in the University's general education program and supports other majors.

The Chemistry Department is composed of 4 full-time equivalent faculty members, support staff, and approximately 100 majors. The Department emphasizes quality undergraduate instruction and offers considerable hands-on experience with close student-faculty contact in classes and in research. The curriculum has been designed to emphasize modern laboratory techniques. The department's advanced instrumentation includes a GC-MS, FT-IR, HPLC-ESI-MS, UV-Vis spectrophotometers, a fluorescence spectrometer with polarizers, AAS and 400 mHz FT-NMR capable of rapid C-13 and 2-D analysis. Also available in the Keck Microanalysis Laboratory (part of the Cerent Engineering Science complex) are a scanning electron microscope with energy-dispersive x-ray analysis, two atomic force microscopes, an Auger spectrometer and an epifluorescent and laser scanning confocal microscope.

Duties of the Position

The Department of Chemistry within the School of Science and Technology (SST) at Sonoma State University (SSU) is seeking a highly motivated, dynamic teacher/scholar to join the department for one-year as a visiting professor. The available position is at the rank of assistant professor and requires a Ph.D. in chemistry. Preference is for candidates who can teach inorganic and organic chemistry, but applicants in closely related fields are also encouraged to apply. The successful candidate may have a demonstrated record of excellence in undergraduate teaching and be actively involved in research in a closely related field. In particular, we are interested in individuals who are passionate about undergraduate education, and who are capable of teaching a wide variety of undergraduate courses, including organic and inorganic lecture and labs. This visitor will also have the opportunity to engage students in research.

The position will involve teaching inorganic and organic chemistry lectures and lab courses, general education courses, and upper division capstone and elective courses. The total assignment each semester is 12 weighted teaching units of lecture and laboratory. In addition to teaching this position will have academic advising responsibilities, assist the department with administrative and/or committee work and program assessment, and may be expected to assume campus and school-wide committee responsibilities.

Professional Qualifications

To be recommended for appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor, the candidate must have completed a Ph.D. in chemistry by the time of appointment. We are seeking enthusiastic and passionate candidates with a background in inorganic chemistry, organic chemistry or closely related field.

Rank and Salary

Service credit depends upon academic preparation and professional experience. The anticipated salary range for this position is: $72,000-$75,000.
