What are the responsibilities and job description for the Research Scientist position at Sound Agriculture?
We are looking for a Research Scientist to test new hypotheses and explore the knowledge frontiers for our Nutrient Use Efficiency and Carbon sequestration pipelines. The Research Scientist designs and implements experiments to validate mode of action hypotheses and select the best concepts for field testing. This role requires initiative, strong project management skills and scientific creativity. We are looking for a candidate that thrives working both independently and as a team member.
This role reports to the Director, Chemical Biology and is based in our Emeryville, CA headquarters.
Responsibilities
- Design and execute experiments to test hypotheses and mine scientific literature to guide experimental design
- Contribute to the design and evaluation of microbiome experiments (controlled environment/field) with Bioinformaticians and Plant Biologists
- Use statistical analysis software to analyze datasets and communicate results to diverse audiences
- Provide mentorship and train more junior researchers (may include direct line management responsibilities depending on experience)
- Maintain safe practices in the laboratory
- Meticulous attention to detail and strong record keeping skills
- Promote a positive and inclusive work environment
Target Skills & Experience
- A PhD, or equivalent experience in microbiology, biochemistry, plant biology, chemistry, or related fields
- Demonstrated success in the development and implementation of screening tools for the identification and/or mode of action elucidation of plant physiology regulators, nutrient utilization, or small molecules for microbiome regulation
- Strong aptitude in experimental design, hypothesis-driven problem solving, and good data analysis and interpretation skills
- Understanding of microbial ecology and relevant processes (ie quorum sensing, plant-microbe symbiosis)
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple projects and tasks
- Desire to be part of a rapidly evolving organization, which requires flexibility and a willingness to learn new techniques and concepts
This role demonstrates our core values by:
- Boldness: Confidently approaches the development of nutrient utilization efficiency assays with a clear vision for the output aiming to be better and faster than our competitors
- Ownership: Embraces the critical evaluation of all experimental results showing strong decision making skills when providing clear conclusions and next steps
- Respect: Value the diversity of ideas both old and new, to generate value added information for our customers
- Creativity: Welcome every day with curiosity and originality to find new ways to evaluate small molecules for our Nutrient Use Efficiency and Carbon sequestration pipelines
