Job Summary
SoundWaters, a nonprofit environmental education organization based in Stamford, CT, is accepting
applications for Schooner Captain in Stamford, CT.

Founded in 1989, SoundWaters is the premiere environmental education organization focused on the
protection of Long Island Sound. SoundWaters works in partnership with individuals, schools, communities,
businesses, civic organizations, and other environmental and educational organizations to develop experiences
that foster a sense of responsibility and encourage actions that ensure the sustainable future of the Long
Island Sound ecosystem. At SoundWaters we believe that our community is stronger when we are all
connected to and learning from the Sound.

The Schooner SoundWaters is the flagship of the organization and serves more than 6,000 student and adult
passengers annually. She is a steel-hulled, three-masted, gaff-rigged schooner launched in 1986 and certified
to carry up to 48 passengers. SoundWaters sails from her homeport in Stamford Harbor and visits numerous
other ports in Connecticut and New York as she carries out her mission. Shipboard programs focus on marine
science field study and include plankton collection, water quality, human impact, and a trawl net. In addition,
SoundWaters delivers leadership training programs, private charters and public sails. A key member of the
SoundWaters management team, the Captain is responsible for leading a crew of Educators in the safe
operation of the vessel and in executing SoundWaters education mission as well as the year-round
maintenance and regulation compliance.

QUALIFCATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

  • Licensed Master, minimum 50GT, Inland with Auxiliary Sail.
Minimum of five years of vessel operations experience. Priority will be given to individuals with

experience in shipboard education programs.

RESPONSIBILITIES
• Ensure safe operation of vessel at all times. Oversee daily operation of SoundWaters in strict compliance

with company policies and federal and state regulations.
  • Lead, by direction and example, a crew of six and all aspects of the Schooner SoundWaters, including
shipboard education programs, personnel management, vessel maintenance, and regulation compliance.
  • Establish and maintain constructive, supportive relationship with crew that promotes open communication
and feedback and provides crew with professional and personal growth and development opportunities.
  • Liaison with U.S. Coast Guard.
  • Work in collaboration with Vice President of Programs and Director of Education to implement curriculum

and training to ensure crew delivers excellent education programs and customer service during all
operations.

  • Work closely with Administrative Support Coordinator to deliver outstanding charter experiences.
  • Maintain vessel to the highest industry standards. Plan and implement maintenance projects.
  • Plan and adhere to annual operations and maintenance budget.
  • Train and maintain consistent relationship with Relief Captains.
SKILLS
• Excellent judgement, seamanship and boat handling skills. Previous command time highly preferable.
  • Unwavering commitment to the safety of passengers, crew and vessel.
  • Exceptional ability to train, manage, develop and be a role model for crew.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to relate well to passengers of all ages and backgrounds.
  • Passion for education and SoundWaters’ mission.
  • Excellent customer service skills.


WORK ENVIRONMENT
• Must be willing to use personal vehicle for local travel with reimbursement.
