Description

The South Dakota Science and Technology Authority (SDSTA) owns and operates the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF). The Ross Shaft Foreman directs all shaft construction, maintenance and operations activities to ensure safe and efficient underground access in accordance with established Ross Shaft performance requirements. The Ross Shaft Foreman provides direct supervision of Ross Shaft crew members. The Foreman leads in a manner that fosters a positive work environment for Ross Shaft crews and SURF stakeholders. The Ross Shaft Foreman is expected to operate predominantly underground while on shift to ensure authorized tasks are accomplished safely to SDSTA standards.


Line of Authority

The Ross Shaft Foreman reports to directly to the Ross Shaft Superintendent.


Functional Responsibilities (include but are not limited to)

Planning, scheduling, and supervising shaft construction and project activities

  • Determines priorities of shaft project-related work based on needs of the facility and its users while ensuring safe operation and access is not compromised.
  • Prepares schedules and timelines for projects and manages activities.
  • Periodically reviews the progress of projects and verifies quality and cost effectiveness of work.

Planning, scheduling, supervising, and inspecting routine maintenance and shaft operations

  • Prepares routine maintenance schedules.
  • Oversees removal of snow and parking lot maintenance.
  • Monitors environmental management systems to ensure the most efficient and cost- effective use of HVAC equipment while maximizing energy conservation.
  • Ensures adequate supplies and equipment are available for current and forecasted needs.
  • Oversees custodial, grounds, and building security activities to ensure facilities are clean, hygienic, safe and present a neat appearance.
  • Inspects and ensures the proper working order of all safety equipment and all tools and equipment used for Yates Shaft activities.

Supervising staff

  • Evaluates workload to plan and assign work.
  • Sets and communicates performance standards and expectations.
  • Reviews, evaluates and addresses job performance.
  • Reviews and approves leave requests and time forms.

Accountabilities

The Ross Shaft Foreman has the following accountabilities:

  • To the Ross Shaft Superintendent for ensuring shaft operation needs are met and conveying information regularly to the Ross Shaft Superintendent concerning progress on the Ross Shaft Foreman responsibilities.
  • To the shaft crews for ensuring all members of the team are working together to address the support needs of SURF and resolve issues.

Authorities

The Ross Shaft Foreman has the following authorities:

  • To stop work upon recognition of a condition that presents imminent danger to the safety and health of staff, the public or the environment.

Requirements

Qualifications

Education

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent is required.

Experience

  • Five years of experience planning and managing construction and maintenance of major facility infrastructure.
  • Experience in underground infrastructure is highly desired.
  • Proficiency or willing to develop proficiency with Microsoft Office suites (Excel, Word, PowerPoint).

Working Requirements

  • Proof of a valid driver’s license is required.
  • Comply with SDSTA’s safety program.
  • Act in accordance with SDSTA’s core values: Safety Focused, Care for Others, Professionalism and Being a Team Player.
  • Perform strenuous physical labor and lift heavy items.
  • Work in all types of environmental conditions (heat, humidity, wet, cold).
  • Work in the SURF underground environment at depths up to 5000 feet or deeper.
  • Operate heavy equipment and hand and power tools.
  • Work from ladders, scaffolding and in confined places.
  • Work extended shifts, weekends, holidays and callouts as scheduled.
