Job Description
SUMMARY:

Perform advising duties that are based on theories and knowledge of teaching, learning, and human development, reflect developmental and demographic profiles of the student population, and respond to the needs of individuals, special populations, and communities.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Provide academic advising via phone, text, email, distance, and in-person meetings to clarify educational, career, and life goals.

  • Engage in the evaluation of student diagnostic exams related to learning styles, career goals, and academic stressors. Utilize this information to foster student understanding of personal strengths and interests to aid in the development of an Educational Success Plan (ESP).
  • Evaluate and monitor student academic progress, in the context of the student’s ESP, through regular meetings, communications, assessments, and data collection.
  • As needed, assist students in developing a plan to improve academic and/or financial aid standing.
  • Assist students in the transition to a faculty advisor in the area of the declared major.
  • Establish and maintain collaborative working relationships with campus colleagues (e.g. Academic Departments, New Student Relations, Student Life, Financial Aid, Campus Housing, Office of Admission and Records, etc.) to offer joint programs which help students integrate their academic, career, and personal goals.
  • Work collaboratively with campus colleagues to increase retention and commitment to student success in support of the South Plains College Institutional Mission.
  • Refer students to appropriate internal and external resources that foster student success.
  • Maintain academic advising records in compliance with the College and the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).
  • Maintain current knowledge of the institution’s academic programs, curriculum, practices, and academic and student policies.
  • Assist in New Student Orientation activities.
  • Actively participate in professional development opportunities and professional organizations, as well as college-wide committees, etc.
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues to implement and improve advising practices.
  • Improve effectiveness and efficiency of caseload management by mastering support technology. The above list of duties should not be construed as an exhaustive list. Other duties may be assigned. Note that on occasion, evening and weekend work may be required.

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

Bachelor’s degree required, Master’s degree preferred.

  • One year of professional experience, preferably in higher education.
  • Demonstrated ability to work on multiple projects in a fast-paced environment independently as well as part of a team.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Understanding and support of community colleges.
  • A professional and positive attitude towards their work, the mission of the institution, and the goals of the College.
  • Adaptability, continuous learning, strong critical judgment, a commitment to diversity and teamwork, and providing quality services are some of the competencies required for success.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business documents including invoices and monthly reports. Ability to write reports and business correspondence. Ability to maintain accurate and detailed records. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of students, parents, faculty, staff, and the general public.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs. Ability to interpret and understand mathematical relationships.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to calculate figures and amounts and develop statistical information. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
