What are the responsibilities and job description for the Lifeguard position at South Shore YMCA?
Under the supervision of the Aquatics Leadership the lifeguard is charged with effectively and safely supervising the pool environment in accordance with the following policies established by the South Shore YMCA while also providing a high level of member service.
1. PROGRAM EXECUTION
- Supervise all pool activities while on duty, and assist with set up or break down of pool transitions.
- Adhere to the 10/10 guard standard at all times (10 seconds to recognize a victim & 10 seconds to reach the victim).
- Guard must be in the chair or directly at pool edge, actively scanning their zone with their head moving from side to side.
- Guard tube must be with them at all times while scanning with strap on in the ready position.
- Respond to incidents appropriately, calmly and professionally.
- Follow and enforce pool rules on and off duty.
- Lifeguards will not leave the pool unguarded. Lifeguards can only be relieved by approved, certified lifeguards.
- Record all incidents and accidents immediately after situation has been resolved and you will not be distracted from guarding the pool.(Report emergency immediately to supervisor on duty).
2. STAFF ENGAGEMENT AND TEAMWORK
- Work with fellow YMCA staff members and treat them with respect.
- Every lifeguard has the responsibility of reviewing all guidelines for emergency procedures to ensure a prompt and appropriate response to any incident.
- Perform other duties needed as delegated by the supervisor on duty or Aquatic Directors.
- Attend all staff meetings and complete skill trainings.
3. MEMBER ENGAGEMENT & DEVELOPMENT
- Enforce all pool rules in a consistent, fair and firm manner.
- Interact with members in a friendly, engaging, and professional manner.
- Educate members of all policies and procedures of the YMCA and the Aquatics Department when needed.
- Be familiar with all information and answer questions about programs, schedules, and policies or direct people to Aquatic Directors.
- Ensure that the South Shore YMCA Child Protection Policies are fulfilled.
4. FACILITY MANAGEMENT
- Maintain a clean and organized pool environment.
- Record and report any faulty equipment and/or lapse in maintenance to the supervisor on duty.
- Take and record chemical readings and bather counts per department standards.
5. VOLUNTEER DEVELOPMENT
- Support volunteers and their daily functions.

QUALIFICATIONS
Current Certifications:
- Current Lifeguard/First Aid/CPR Certification
- Child Abuse Prevention
- OSHA/Emergency procedures
- Must be at least 16 years of age.
- Previous lifeguard experience preferred
