Head Coach - Dance Team

REPORTS TO: Activities Director

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Valid Minnesota coaching license or NFICEP certification preferred.
  • Strong background and expertise in the activity area.
  • Proven experience in teaching and modeling character and responsible behavior.
  • Positive, high energy, and committed.
  • Partners wells with parents, staff, community leaders, etc.
  • View success not just as winning; but as helping team members to reach goals.
  • Orientation toward continuous improvement.
  • Substantial knowledge of the technical aspects of the sport/activity and examination of new theories and procedures pertinent to the field.
  • Maintenance of active membership in related professional organizations.

SUPERVISES: Student participants and assumes a supervisory role over all student participants in program when such control is needed.

JOB GOAL: Carry out the objectives of the program as outlined by the Activities Director. To instruct student participants in individual and team fundamentals, strategy and physical training necessary for them to realize a degree of individual and team success.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Instruct students in fundamental skills, strategy and physical training necessary for them to achieve a degree of individual and team success. At the same time, the student shall receive instruction that will lead to the formulation of moral values, pride of accomplishment, acceptable social behavior, self-discipline and self-confidence.
  • Responsible for all matters pertaining to the organization, administration and coaching program. Enforce all rules of the Classic Suburban Conference, the Minnesota State High School League and National Federation as they pertain to softball.
  • A completed and signed parental permission form and physical examination card shall be in the hands of the coach or Activities Office prior to an athlete beginning practice. Assure that players and coaches under his/her jurisdiction understand the training rule policy. These forms are to be returned to the Activities Director promptly.
  • Cooperate with the administration, Activities Director, fellow coaches and students to promote the best interests of the entire activities program.
  • Work with the Activities Director in the appointment and dismissal of assistant coaches in grades 7 - 12.
  • Schedule meetings to coordinate coaching methods at different levels; helps in assisting the Activities Director in assigning duties to all assistant coaches; and assists the Activities Director in determining the success of the lower level programs.
  • Conform to activities department policy in ordering equipment and supplies for the sport involved.
  • See that all candidates for a team have had a physical examination and have returned the physical examination/parental consent form before the first practice session.
  • Prepare a roster of all team members. Have participants fill out the athletic eligibility form from which the master eligibility list will be compiled. Both should be in the Activities Office and principal's office one week prior to the first game.
  • Assume responsibility for conduct of contestants in sport involved.
  • Accompany and supervise the team to and from all contests.
  • Plan and supervise all practice sessions. Suggested length is not more than two and a half hours.
  • Work with trainer-equipment manager in selecting reliable student managers and student trainers; assign their duties and supervise their work.
  • Conform to activities policy to assure that students are not given keys and access cards to enter buildings when the coach is not present.
  • Conform to school policies in handling injuries; report all serious injuries immediately to the Activities Director.
  • Attend scheduled school meetings unless excused. During sports season, coaches should check with principal or department chairperson as to what transpired at a meeting that the coach was unable to attend.
  • Turn in a complete inventory of all equipment to the Activities Director at the conclusion of the season.
  • Complete and return a Coaches Annual Report form to the Activities Director within two weeks after the last contest.
  • Complete and return a supplemental pay voucher to the Activities Director after all responsibilities have been fulfilled.
  • Complete all requirements mandated by State and National agencies.
  • The success of activity programs has a strong influence on the community’s image of the entire system. The public exposure is a considerable responsibility and community/parent pressure for winning performance is taxing, but must not override the objectives of good sportsmanship and good mental health.
  • The position includes other unusual aspects such as extended time, risk injury factor and due process predicaments.
  • It is the express intent of these duties and responsibilities to give sufficient guidance to function. In cases not specifically covered, it shall be assumed that a coach shall exercise common sense and good judgment.
  • Has a thorough knowledge of all the policies approved by the South St. Paul Board of Education and is responsible for its implementation by the entire staff of the sport/activity program.
  • Has knowledge of existing system, state and league regulations; implements the same consistently and interprets them for staff.
  • Generates an attitude of good sportsmanship and fair play by adhering to the Minnesota State High School League “Code of Ethics”.
  • Understand the proper administrative line of command and refers all requests or grievances through proper channels. Is aware of all public, staff, and departmental meetings that require attendance.
  • Establishes the fundamental philosophy, skills and techniques to be taught by staff. Holds clinics and staff meetings to insure staff awareness of overall program.
  • Trains and informs staff, encourages professional growth by encouraging clinic attendance.
  • Maintains discipline and works to increase morale and cooperation.
  • Performs such other duties, which may be assigned by the Activities Director.
  • Assists the Activities Director in scheduling needs requirements for tournament and special sports/activity events.
  • Assists in the necessary preparation to hold scheduled s events or practices and adheres to the scheduled facility times.
  • Verifies that all students have all forms and obligations cleared through the Activities Office before the athlete is allowed to practice.
  • Provides proper safeguards for maintenance and protection of assigned equipment and facilities.
  • Advises the Activities Director and recommends policy, method or procedural changes.
  • Prepares and submits year-end reports including information as to participants, letter winners, grade levels, specific honors, records, standings, and recommendations for all levels of participation.

The employee is occasionally required to kneel, reach, stand and walk. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds. The employee is occasionally required to lift and/or move up to and over 20 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust focus. Employee must have valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.
