The SSS Program Eligibility Specialist/Tutor Coordinator is primarily responsible for the design and implementation of a successful SSS tutoring program, obtaining and ensuring the accuracy of student information for program intake, preparing and monitoring success plans for 40% of the students served, scheduling participants for tutoring, maintaining our online student database, working with supervisory personnel to maintain all lab equipment in good working condition, and advising the SSS Director of purchases or upgrades needed to existing equipment
Essential Job Functions
Completion of the following performance measures:
- Participants Served: 40 participants served by the role of Program Eligibility Specialist/Tutor Coordinator during the academic year (fall to summer).
- Persistence Rate: 60% of participants served by the Program Eligibility Specialist/Tutor Coordinator will persist from one academic year to the beginning of the next academic year or graduate and/or transfer from a 2-year to a 4-year institution during the academic year.
- Good Academic Standing Rate: 70% of participants served by the Program Eligibility Specialist/Tutor Coordinator will meet the performance level required to stay in good academic standing at the grantee institution.
- Graduation and Transfer Rate (2-year institutions): 10 % of new participants served each year will graduate with an associate’s degree or certificate within four (4) years, AND 15% of new participants served each year will transfer with an associate’s degree or certificate within four (4) years.
Required Tasks:
- Demonstration of initiative and vision in working with at-risk students
- Assist in program recruitment by acquainting students with the SSS program and project services and distributing SSS applications to potential program participants
- Interview potential Student Support Services participants and coordinate the efforts to support that student through their college experience at Arkansas State University Three Rivers
- Review course completion at the end of the semester and update the degree plan on file, notify students of their progression, and complete student monitoring spreadsheet
- Semester checks to determine persistence to the next semester and academic standing
- Monitor participant’s academic progress in classes via reviewing transcripts with participants and monitoring the degree plan to ensure progress towards graduation requirements
- Provide online presentation of SSS services to distance learners
- Provide intrusive advising to first-year SSS participants to assist in solving issues before they become overwhelmed
- Collaborate with Student Services, other college personnel and community agencies to identify and access additional support services to help program participants meet their goals
- Maintain detailed records of student contacts with appropriate advising codes in SSS database
- Provide services to program participants in accordance with the Competitive Preference Priorities
- Check participants’ grades at mid-term for signs of academic distress; adjust services
- Provide informal degree audit for each SSS participant at end of each semester to ensure participants are on track to graduate
- Meet with all participants a minimum of three contacts per semester to discuss academic progress; adjust SSS services if needed
- Offer group/one-on-one tutorial sessions in academic subjects on an individual/special needs basis
- Provide on-line tutoring in all subjects via online platform i.e. Tutor.com, Blackboard, etc.
- Workshop planning and implementation as deemed appropriate for your position, ensuring that flyers, sign in sheets, and evaluations are documented in Student Access and filed in the respective binder
- Monitor use of computer lab facilities and modify as needed, assist in completing computerized assessments, assist with computer applications/software, and Provide supportive atmosphere to increase computer skill
- Maintain master list of approved tutors and master tutoring schedule of all tutoring sessions
- Provide participants with information about their rights and responsibilities to receive free tutoring services
- Submit monthly progress reports to the Director including a cumulative summary of contact hours
- Coordinate the scheduling of tutorial requests made by participants including appropriate assessment of tutoring needs
- Collect academic progress information from participants and their tutors for documentation purposes
- Provide maintenance of the student database
- Provide tutor training in educational techniques, maintain contact with faculty, monitor tutorial assistance, and make modifications as necessary to meet program/participant needs
- Seek student/faculty evaluation of tutorial services and maintain tutor-instructor contact to ensure quality assistance
- Perform other related duties as assigned by the Director
Required Knowledge and Skills
Ability to work effectively with low-income, first generation, and disabled students in need of supportive services and their families. Knowledge and proficiency in the operation and use of personal computers utilizing various software applications (i.e., word processing, spreadsheet, and database management software) including the Internet. Strong communications skills (written and verbal) and the ability to present information to diverse audiences. Ability to work and cooperate with faculty, students, directors, the public, and employees at all levels in order to exchange ideas, information, and opinions. The knowledge, skills, and abilities to encounter students struggling with classes, needing disability services, students who need help communicating with faculty/staff, students dealing with emotional, personal, and academic issues, as well as the daily struggle to find good contact methods to communicate with students. The ability to evaluate students, assess their needs, and assist them with a plan for college success.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in psychology, sociology, business administration, or a related field, proficiency in software programs and proficiency in data entry; strong interpersonal skills; Background similar to students served or experience with disadvantaged students; Proficiency with computers; Strong interpersonal skills; Knowledge of basic office procedures and how to operate common office equipment . Other job-related education and/or experience may be substituted for all or part of these basic requirements, upon approval of the Qualifications Review Committee.
Preferred Qualifications: Experience in TRIO programs; Experience in a college setting, experience assisting students who are low-income, first generation, and/or disabled; Supervisory experience in a lab setting; and experience working in a tutoring environment.
This is a grant funded position and employment is contingent upon the continued funding of the grant.
