Under the general direction and supervision of the Principal Investigator STEM-CONNECT grant or Chair of the Mathematics Department, the Learning Assistant or Peer Mentor is responsible for providing individual or small group academic support to improve student success and retention students in STEM courses to fulfill the goals and objectives of aiding students’ success. This is a part-time temporary position. Grant funding for this position is expected to end September 30, 2025. The position may be extended depending on grant funding availability.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Provide Academic Support and mentoring during Assigned Hours sessions
Aid students by (1) providing clarification of instructions, information, and concepts of student assignments, (2) assisting students to increase subject-specific competencies, (3) promoting independent learning strategies to boost student self-confidence and (4) promoting effective study practices needed to master content. Always be present at the scheduled sessions and notify the supervisor in advance if a session needs to be canceled or rescheduled.
Some of the specific duties may include but are not limited to:
- Holding a mentored “study session”. Students would know when it is scheduled and show up regularly to work with each other on assignments.
- Participate in a course discussion board on at STEM CONNECT seminar Canvas site to help facilitate discussion in STEM courses.
- Respond to email questions sent to you.
- Schedule one-on-one tutoring sessions for students who request it.
- If students don’t contact you, then you could periodically contact them, asking for a Zoom session to discuss how their course is going.
Record Maintenance
Maintains records associated with students receiving tutoring or mentoring and assists in creating reports on such data when needed.

SCHEDULE
Normal work hours for this temporary position, scheduled by the Principal Investigator STEM-CONNECT grant or Chair of the Mathematics Department will be 15 hours a work week. These hours will be coordinated with the person in this position and flexibility will be offered. Maximum number of hours per week will be 15 hours.
