Southeast Louisiana Legal Services (SLLS) is a non-profit law firm serving the 22 parishes east of the Atchafalaya basin. We have offices in Baton Rouge, Covington, Hammond, Harvey, Houma and New Orleans. We provide free civil legal aid to low-income households.
SLLS anticipates hiring for the following position: Staff Attorney – Veterans and Innovative Projects
The Staff Attorney for the Veterans and Innovative Projects Unit handles legal representation of homeless clients, veterans, and provides legal services in partnership with Delgado Community College, and Daughters of Charity Health Clinic. The legal casework is primarily disability cases, expungements, and limited family law matters. Cases are sometimes referred to other SLLS units or the Pro Bono Project for handling. The position requires the ability to work well as part of a team, to juggle multiple priorities, and to work well in collaboration with community partners.
Minimum Qualifications: 1. Graduation from an accredited law school with a Juris Doctor (J.D.) or LL.B. 2. Licensed to practice law within the State of Louisiana. 3. Demonstrated proficiency in written and oral communication, client counseling, advocacy, research, dedication to serving vulnerable people and social service referrals. 4. Dependability, ability to respond to emergencies, good work habits, self-motivation, capacity to work well with others. 5. Spanish-English bilingualism and Vietnamese-English bilingualism is a plus that receives extra compensation.
Salary Range: $46,000-$64,000.
