Summary
Under the direction of the Southern Specialty Underwriting Supervisor, the Underwriter is responsible for reviewing, underwriting, and rating submissions for quotes, new and renewal business, and endorsements within underwriting guidelines. This role will assist with business development and growth by building relationships with independent agents. The Underwriter will apply sound judgment to underwrite business that minimizes risk and contributes to a profitable portfolio.
Essential Functions
- Review, evaluate, and process applications, renewals, change requests, and cancellations by applying sound underwriting judgment and adhering to company policy and state regulations
- Gather necessary information and make decisions within limits of underwriting authority
- Develop positive working relationships with agents through various modes of communication: telephone, email, and in-person
- Perform periodic field visits to agents to improve quality of submissions, stimulate profitable production, and strengthen company/agency relations
- Communicate with agents regarding risk acceptance, declination, or modifications
- Make entries as required, properly and promptly in underwriting systems to ensure accuracy of data in relation to underwriting and quoting
- Other duties as assigned
Job Requirements, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- 3-5 years of commercial underwriting experience required
- Knowledge of Property and Casualty Insurance
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with particular attention to detail
- Exceptional organizational and time management skills
- Strong computer aptitude which includes expertise with Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook)
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- Able to work independently with little supervision, but also able to work collaboratively with a team
