Position Summary
The Medical Laboratory Technician performs phlebotomy, hematologic, chemical, microscopic, morphologic, immunologic, and microbiological testing in a prompt, accurate, and reliable manner according to established hospital and departmental policies and procedures. The MLT also participates in Quality Control, Quality Assurance, and Performance Improvement activities. The MLT supports the hospital in meeting Joint Commission and CAP accreditation standard. The MLT adheres to CMS billing compliance regulations.
Service/Quality Excellence:
Participates in the Hospital’s Service Excellence Program designed to improve patient care, employee and physician satisfaction. Participation includes knowledge of HCAHPS (Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Systems and Providers), which measures patient’s perception of care received and Core Measure Set, which measures performance of patients’, care based on medical research. Participates
In hospital wide and unit specific performance projects.
II. Equipment Listing:
Operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of the following: Laboratory analyzers, cell washer, slide stainer, centrifuges, incubators, computer, copy/fax machine, shredder, printers
III. Position Requirements:
A. Licensure/Certification/Registration:
Preferred: Nationally recognized certification.
Minimum: Nationally recognized certification or equivalent. (Non-traditional routes to establish skill level may be accepted after review of education, training, and experience if recognized as acceptable under CLIA ‘88 mandates.)
B. Education:
Preferred: Two years college with Associate’s degree in medical laboratory technology or related science with formal MLT internship.
Minimum: Two years college including classes in biology, chemistry and mathematics. Non-traditional routes to establish skill level may be accepted after review of education, training, and experience if recognized as acceptable under CLIA ‘88 mandates.
C. Experience: One year clinical laboratory experience or equivalent clinical lab training program.
D. Special qualifications: Good communication skills, computer skills helpful. Ability to work with others as a team to ensure quality patient care.
