GENERAL SUMMARY
Leads and directs all Engineering activities and team members and provides technical leadership for all engineering programs. Ensures customer requirements with regard to functionality, performance, manufacturability, quality, reliability and serviceability are met. As a member of the plant leadership team, participates in strategic business planning and lean initiatives and encompasses Spartan’s Core Operating Values in daily activities and in the attainment of department strategies and goals.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES - ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
1. Leads a department of engineers accountable for managing all customer-driven and internal product changes and product launches.
2. Provides oversight over projects and ensures project cost/budget, performance, and timing commitments are met.
3. Leads implementation of engineering standard practices as defined by the New Product Review process with internal teams to keep projects on time and on task.
4. Provides oversight of tooling, process, and document changes associated with the requested customer changes.
5. Partners with Program Management in a cross-functional product team environment.
6. Provides technical leadership in the development of die cast, M&A, and material flow processes.
7. Leads design reviews for new products, tools, processes, and equipment. Reviews designs for manufacturability and performs risk assessments.
8. Leads quality management responsibilities within the engineering team, including,
• selection of special characteristics,
• capacity analysis,
• ensuring quality objectives are set and attained,
• monitoring quality issues, identifying root cause of quality problems, and identifying areas of improvements in
the design process,
• ensuring corrective and preventative actions are in place and followed when quality and nonconformance
issues arise, and
• ensuring engineering team procedures, practices, and processes comply with quality management system
procedures and standards, and provides training in these requirements, as needed.
9. Provides technical support to the Operations Team, through problem solving and Continuous Improvement
methods.
10. Participates in lean manufacturing initiatives and incorporates lean and continuous improvement concepts in all
department activities and completion of projects.
11. Performs other duties as assigned. Supervisory Responsibilities
12. Supports Company’s succession planning and talent development strategies by taking an active role in:
a) identifying successor candidates through recruitment and internal talent assessment
b) evaluating individual and team needs
c) creating development plans/goals
d) providing ongoing feedback and mentoring
13. Manages team member performance by ensuring each team member understands their job roles, responsibilities, and expectations and by regularly providing feedback on performance. Holds team members accountable for following Spartan’s Core Operating Values.
14. Maintains ongoing communications to inform team members of customer quality, product, delivery and team performance issues. Communicates company goals and strategies and how team and individual goals/performance fit into these goals/strategies.
15. Builds and maintains collaboration within team and between other teams in the company. Resolves conflicts between team members and with other teams.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education, Certifications, Training, Experience Required:
• Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering or related field.
• 10 years of progressive work experience in Engineering in a manufacturing environment and 5 years
management experience
• High volume automotive with automated machining, assembly, and tooling experience.
Preferred: Experience in lean manufacturing processes
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Computer, technical, mechanical, mathematical and/or scientific skills
• Proficient skills in MS Word and Excel.
• Advanced skills in CAD, PQ2, GD & T, and 5s and visual factory concepts.
• Advanced knowledge in the following: • gating, runner design, PQ2 diagrams, atomization, gate velocity, and
tool design;
• Statistical Process Control (SPC) techniques and programs.
• blue print/part print reading skills.
• Solid understanding and experience in mold flow modeling simulations and interpretations.
• Strong knowledge of lean manufacturing concepts.
