Medical Technologist at SMC Blood Bank

JOB DESCRIPTION:

A SRHS Medical Technologist for the Blood Bank performs various quantitative and qualitative clinical laboratory studies to comply with physician requests for analyses of blood specimens in order to provide data for use in the diagnosis and treatment of disease and to provide safe and timely blood products for patient transfusion.  An MT for the Blood Bank must follow established laboratory standards, practices, and procedures, understands, and complies with the Behavior Standards and department policies, procedures and regulations.

 

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Education           

  • Baccalaureate Degree (B.S.) in Medical Technology or in a laboratory related science
  • The completion of an approved technical training program, which must include training in transfusion services. 

Experience        

  • 0-1 year

License/Registration/Certifications       

  • MT or MLS (ASCP) registry eligible or MLT (ASCP) registered with a baccalaureate degree in medical technology or field of science.
  • Grandfather in all MT I, currently recognized as of October 1, 2011.

 

JOB CORE RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Must be able to provide and understand the specific communication, developmental and treatment needs of patients, families, and visitors ranging in age from fetus to geriatric.
  • Must be able to make decisions and use appropriate judgment about sample collection, specimen handling, specimen acceptance, patient testing, follow-up testing, result reporting, component acceptance, component testing, component issuance and/or return, and component discard.
  • Must be able to operate instrumentation and interpret reportable results; perform instrument maintenance, troubleshooting, and quality control.
  • Must be able to maintain accurate records and reporting of test results with the knowledge of critical values.
  • Must be able to remain calm and to effectively communicate to diffuse stressful situations while maintaining patient safety requirements. 
  • Must be able to perform accurately and efficiently in highly stressful life and death situations. 
  • Must be able to prioritize and multi-task with high workloads. 
  • Must be able to work as a team member, demonstrating good interpersonal skills.
  • Must be able to communicate professionally with physicians, management, and associates.
  • Must maintain strict confidentiality of work-related information.
  • Must possess ability to perform accurately and efficiently in any situation.
  • Must possess ability to cooperate as a team member with positive interactions.
  • Must maintain strict confidentiality of work-related information.
  • Must possess ability to make decisions and use appropriate judgement.
  • Must possess ability to withstand the stress and demands of an active position.
  • Must possess manual dexterity, good eye-hand coordination, adequate vision and hearing.
