Job Description:

Position Summary:

This role is responsible to lead, develop and implement environmental, health, safety (EHS) programs, policies, and training to ensure compliance with federal, state and local regulations. In collaboration with Transportation management, directs safety and compliance systems for a fleet comprised of more than 500 commercial trucks, 850 drivers and 17 terminals. Ensures continuous improvement of a People First safety culture that leads to industry leadership, reduction of accidental losses and impact on operational goals of the company.

Job Duties:

  • Lead the development, implementation and execution of effective management systems and strategies to reduce safety incidents and associated losses, while ensuring viable business solutions.

  • Coach, train and develop associates/management on safety policies, procedures, and initiatives to build cross functional ownership and shared leadership for program implementation.

  • Formulate and deliver comprehensive orientation and educational programs to develop driver skills, including regular safety communications, refresher/remedial skills training.

  • Motivate and reward safe behavior through recognition, promotion, and awareness events.

  • Establish and counsel 'Accident Review Committees' to identify and respond to higher risk drivers.

  • Conduct audits and assistance visits to assure all locations operate in accordance with all federal and state and local regulations as well as internal best practices (DOT/FMSCA, OSHA, EPA, etc.).

  • Assist locations with incident response and investigations, ensuring root cause is identified and corrective action taken; manage action tracking to closure.

  • Provide timely reporting updates concerning the status of activities, performance metrics and trends to keep all stakeholders informed of progress.

  • Assist with new business start-ups, equipment design and facility change as this impacts people and fleet safety.

  • Serve as the primary interface with regulatory agencies for inspections and compliance issues pertaining to terminal and vehicular operations.

  • Serve as team leader of our Fleet Safety Network responsible for overall program development.

  • Coach, mentor, develop and train our Risk & Safety Network to effectively manage the fleet safety program at their respective sites.

  • Liaison with insurance partners and Legal Group on all matters pertaining to auto claims & liability.

  • Manage structured return to work programs to ensure timely rehabilitation of disabled associates. Serve as the liaison with medical providers/clinics.

  • Manage direct reports within department, including training, performance management, career development and supporting/monitoring functional goals.

  • Develop and monitor department budget as required.

  • Additional responsibilities may be assigned as needed.

Requirements:

  • BA/BS Degree; CSP/CTP/ARM is preferred but not required.

  • 7 years of direct experience in developing and managing EHS programs, to include 5 years of safety management in transportation.

  • Extensive technical knowledge to lead a national fleet safety program, and background in transportation and related regulations (e.g. DOT/FMCSA, OSHA, EPA).

  • Strategic thinker with tactical implementation skills, including hands-on experience in a strong safety/fleet process from the user-end with demonstrated results.

  • Leadership skills to influence all levels of the organization, ability to coach talent at multiple levels of the organization, consensus builder and a strong team player.

  • Candidate must have an ability to accommodate heavy travel schedule (up to 50%).

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Proficient in MS Office (i.e., Word, Excel and PowerPoint).
